Gangpur, Kerala in national girls hockey semis


Mysore, March 10 (IANS): Gangpur-Odisha registered an 8-1 win over Assam to book their semi-final berth in the Hockey India Junior Women's National Championship (Division B) at the Chamundi Vihar Hockey Ground here Monday.

Gangpur opened their account in the 18th minute when captain Rinki Kujur made no mistake in converting a penalty corner. Within three minutes, Gangpur increased the lead via Janhabi Pradhan who converted another penalty corner. Just before halftime Janhabi took her side to 3-0 through a field goal.

Within five minutes of the second half, Gangpur scored yet again, taking the goal difference to 4-0. Assam finally got a goal (48th minute) through Maxima Xalxo but Gangpur didn't allow the opponents to strike again and instead scored four more goals to win 8-1.

Kerala became the last team to qualify for the semis after overcoming Puducherry 9-0 in their last Pool D match.

Kerala opened with an early third minute goal by Amala Thomas. Aparna Joy helped Kerala to increase the lead (10th) and closed the first half with a 3-0 advantage.

The second half witnessed six goals being scored by Kerala. Amala Thomas went on to add two more goals and got a hat-trick. Captain Vinya Athiyedath also scored two, helping her team to register a convincing win.

Earlier, Andhra Pradesh registered a 6-0 win over Jammu & Kashmir in Pool B.

In Wednesday's semi-finals, Manipur will take on Chhattisgarh while Gangpur will clash with Kerala.

Pool B: Andhra Pradesh 6 beat Jammu & Kashmir 0; Gangpur 8 beat Assam 1

Pool D: Kerala 9 beat Puducherry 0
