Mangalore: Three day workshop on employability skills held at SJEC

Mangalore, Mar 12: The Department of Mechanical Engineering of St Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor, Mangalore, successfully conducted three day workshop 'Prerna' on Employability Skills for the benefit of Junior Training Officers (JTO) of various Industrial Training Institute in Dakshina Kannada from March 4 to March 6.

About 30 participants from 17 Industrial Training Institute in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are participated in this workshop.  The inaugural ceremony of the workshop was held on March 4  at 11 am in Bethania hall.

Y N Salian, principal, Mulky Ramakrishna Punja Industrial Training Institute was the chief guest during the function. Fr Joseph Lobo, director, SJEC, Fr Ajith Menezes, Fr Rohith D’Costa, assistant directors, SJEC and Dr Rio D’Souza, vice-principal, SJEC were guest of honour. Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal, SJEC was president of the function. Dr Thirumaleshwara Bhat, Head of Mechanical Engineering Department, SJEC and Convener of the Workshop and Ravikantha Prabhu, assistant professor, ME, SJEC and Coordinator of the Workshop were the dignitaries on the dais.

Anil Melwyn Rego, asst professor, ME, SJEC was the Master of Ceremony for the inaugural session.

A session on ‘Constitution of India and Professional Ethics’ was conducted by Eugine D’ Cunha. The workshop also included a session on ‘Environment Education’ by  Ivy Savia Dantis.  Bhaskar M  G made a presentation focusing mainly on the ‘Communication skills’, Followed by a session on ‘Labour Welfare Legislation’ by  John Paul Vas. All the technical sessions were excellent and every participant appreciated the efforts of the resource persons.

The second day proceedings began with a session by Noel Deepak Shiri on the topic ‘Occupational safety , health and environment’. Followed by session on the topic ‘Entrepreneurship skill’ Ramanuja C M. The afternoon sessions were devoted to the Laboratory and hands on training conducted by  Ravikantha Prabhu on ‘Basic operations of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Power Point’. The session was held in the department CAD/ CAM Laboratory.

The third day (6th March, 2014) proceedings started with Laboratory sessions,Sathyenra Bhat J and Christopher Cutinho conducted laboratory sessions on ‘Basics of Computer, windows, internet and WEB browser’. The session was held in the department CAED Laboratory, Followed by session on ‘5S Workspace Organization’ by Shreeranga Bhat.

An interactive session on role of Junior Training Officers in development of Industrial Training Institution was conducted by Giridhar Salian, Grade I Principal, Govt. Industrial Training Institute Kadri Hills, Mangalore, who was the chief guest of valedictory function.

The workshop was helpful to all the participants, it was also the first of its kind which was organized for Junior Training Officers (JTO) of various Industrial Training Institute and all the participants enjoyed the sessions and the hospitality. The department and the Convener received accolades from the management.
