Mangalore: Narrow escape for three as wall collapses at construction site

Mangalore Mar 14: Three labourers from Bihar had a lucky escape after a compound wall collapsed at an under-construction building in Urwa here on Friday March 14.

The labourers were identified as Manju (20), Munna (22) and Raja (22), all from Bihar. The incident occurred at around 12 noon.

The three were engaged in clearing the debris at the site when the compound wall suddenly collapsed on them. Munna escaped unhurt but Manju and Raja got buried under the pile of mud.

The other workers immediately rushed to their rescue and took them to a private hospital.

If the mud wall collapses further, there is a likelihood that surrounding houses may be damaged.

According to the sources, the construction is going on from past several months. About 10 months ago, a similar incident had occurred at the site in which five workers escaped unhurt, sources said.

"The adjacent compound wall behind the building collapsed 10 months ago and had damaged the road but  the road is yet to be repaired. Vehicles cannot come till our compound gate. No officials are taking action," said Vasanthi Salian, a neighbour.

Urwa police said they have not received any information about the incident. They said that the building under construction is part of a government project but undertaken by a private company.

    Apartments rates in Mangalore are above average. This has become best money making business. There is no control. Everybody is making money. So, such accidents will be overlooked.

    Really lucky those laborers who narrowly escape from the wall collapse at the construction site at Mangalore.Poor Bihari's who have come here to their living through labour would have become the victims of this collapse.Thanq.

    We are showing sympathy to the workers and to their families over the accident. But why the Authority should issue or grant a permission to build a structure of such a huge size. Are our corporators or city planning authorities are giving a blind eye towards this? Mangalore has such a terrain that one should be careful during such constructions,especially areas like- Nanthoor, Bejai, Shaktinagar, Tarai Thota and parts of Padil (interior) etc. Presume Civil defense or some other agency will act immediately.

    This is called special construction, after completion of building if something happens, contractor, Engineers, and Builder going to escape, I request no one should take shelter such buildings.

    At least follow minimun required constructin safety. Now this a narrow escape. All contractors please try to safe guard workers life.

    Thank God they were rescued.No one responsible Person was there at the time of collapse?why did they give Support to side walls before construction begins since once happened they should be known.when govt.building is they know nobody bothers how and who constructs.Later innocent People ,or whole building collapse and no one is there to ask.
