Mangalore, Jun 5: Mangalore University will introduce a credit-based semester system in under-graduate and degree courses from the year 2006-07. The Chancellor has approved the introduction of the new system in arts, commerce and science streams and in BHM and BASLP courses. However, LLB and BEd courses will remain out of the purview of the scheme.

The new system will enable the students to study inter-disciplinary subjects and they can bag credits for extra and co-curricular activities. According to the scheme, the three year degree course will be divided into six semesters. Student's score, the percentage obtained, class and grade will be mentioned in the marks card.

Meeting of the Board of Studies and teachers will be convened soon to discuss the modalities of the choice-based scheme. Pros and cons of the semester method will be discussed in the meeting and the suggestions will be taken into account to make the system more credible, sources said.

It may be recalled that the university had proposed to implement the semester scheme for degree courses from the academic year 2004-05 itself but was compelled to backtrack due to protest by Mangalore University College Teachers Association (AMUCT) and students.

Following this, the whole scheme has been redesigned and made credit-based. AMUCT and student unions have also given their consent to the new credit-based system.
