Nandan Nilekani, wife make public assets worth Rs 7,700 crore

Bangalore, Mar 20 (PTI): Making his wealth public a day before stepping into the fray, Infosys co-founder and Congress candidate from Bangalore South, Nandan Nilekani has declared that he and his wife Rohini Nilekani have assets worth Rs 7,700 crore.

"I started out with 200 rupees in my pocket, when I graduated from IIT; ...we founded Infosys with Rs 10,000," Nilekani's media team, quoting him, said.

"Today, because of the success of a company built from scratch, Nandan and Rohini have assets of Rs 7,700 crore," a release issued by the media team said. His formidable opponent and five-time Lok Sabha member from Bangalore South, Ananth Kumar of BJP has declared himself poorer than his wife Tejaswani.

In an affidavit filed yesterday, Kumar has declared his total assets stands at Rs 51.12 lakh, while Tejaswani owns assets worth of Rs 3.86 crore. Total assets owned by the family is Rs 4.4 crore.

Chief architect of UPA'S flagship "Aadhar" scheme, Nilekani took the political plunge on March 9, when he joined Congress, a day after the party named him as its candidate from Bangalore South.

Bangalore South has been a hostile terrain for Congress which had been tasting defeat since the late 1970s, barring in 1989 when former Chief Minister late R Gundu Rao had won.

Nilekani said, "Most of our wealth, almost 80 per cent remains in Infosys shares; ...This wealth was created while Infosys brought lakhs of jobs to Bengaluru. The company also shared a lot of wealth with our employees through ESOPs (employee stock ownership plan)."He said he still owns 1.45 per cent, and Rohini 1.3 per cent of Infosys.

Saying he is proud of the fact that his wealth is completely transparent, he said, "I haven't made any of my money illegally, or hid it in investments outside the country.""Nothing is hidden in someone else's bank account. It is all completely transparent, and tax-paid," he added.

Since 1999, both are said to have donated almost Rs 400 crore of their wealth to various causes and charities.

"I have worked in the social sector for more than 15 years now...and when I came into some money through the sale of Infosys shares, I was able to spend more on my philanthropy," Rohini Nilekani said.

Nilekani and Rohini have prioritised their philanthropy into areas like water, governance, education.

I wonder why few people always interested in accumulating the wealth up to so many Crores especially in India? After all what they eat, how much they eat, how they spend life and how long they live is the question mark? If they have diabetes or blood pressure or some other life threatening sickness these wealth has no value in their life. I think these people can develop their own region by donating at least 25% of wealth to the Nation but no instead same people will complain to the Government for under development in their region itself. It’s same like having Mercedes or Rolls Royce Car in your yard, but no proper road outside

This wealth was made with the help of employees they had at Infosys.
The problem with Indian MNC's are that the bosses have never cared what an employee earn but will make sure that they grow their wealth irrespective of they taking it with them after their death.
I have a lot of respect for all these entrepreneurs, but these people never feel that the workers working for them are assets which is even more than any physical or movable assets.
The times needs change, change in the way work happens and freedom at these workplaces.
Nandanji I wish you the best as you are contesting from our constituency. I have nothing against you but this is just some of my thoughts.

Capitalism rewards the person who takes the initiative, the responsibility and the maximum risk. That is why these persons are called entrepreneurs. Did Nandan or NRN know that Infosys would flourish the way it did when they started it ? Obviously not, but they had a vision and were ready to risk big in pursuing that vision. They reaped the rewards for that, but mind you, many do not succeed. Besides hard work and smart decisions the almighty's hand is also needed to achieve success.
So let us give credit where it is due.

People like Nandan Nilekani, know India needs them more than they need India. The battle he is fighting, he is fighting for all of us. His wealth is transparent and clean, yet, people have a problem with that. Congress lost a great amount of good will with media hyped perception. He knows the truth, Congress tried to change course for the better and got itself inflicted with pain. It is the RTI which is bringing some level of transparency. Congress needs to be supported and rewarded not disowned. The corrupt are scared and therefore, making every effort to dis-credit congress, so that the status-quo remains. Or else, why people like Reddy, Yeddy etc., have to rush to push Modi, with a checkered record.

Nandan Nilekani is Great, But the Party he belongs is not having any popularity at the moment .Hence If he wants to do social work he can do that not necessarily as an MP He can form an NGO and do social service in a great way .Regarding AAdhar I would like to give a real life situation in one of the suburbs of Mumbai .The day was somewhere in the month of August 2013 .I went to the Aadhar centre for getting the card .There was a big queue .That time Govt had made it mandatory for the School Children to get the Aadhar .One Lady belonging to the Lower Middle class was just asking me " I live in a Rental house can I get AAdhar for my son" I asked the same with the Clerk he said NO .I asked why ? He said she should bring the original of the agreement .The Owner never gives the Original copy here .Only Rich, who have a Flat in their Name can get AAdhar card so sad.

That is what RSS\BJP does to the people. They themselves do not do any good work helpful to others over and above that talking bad about people who are philanthropists like Mr. Nilekani.
There is another guy here too who benefited earlier, but talking bad about Nilekani.
There is a saying "the dog that bites the hand that fed it..."
One good thing about such charitable people, helping people, providing jobs for various people with their initial efforts, They never expect a "Thank you" from anyone as they are well aware that they will get bad mouthing from the receivers at some stage.
