Over 13.5 lac voters in Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency

Udupi, Mar 21: The deputy commissioner of Udupi, held a press conference on Thursday March 20 to give the following guidelines relating to the upcoming general elections in the district.

As per the directions of Election Commission of India, special camps were held on March 9 and March 16 and a total of 7,155 applications for registration were received from the people.

In the continuous amendments of the voters' list, 31,437 applications were received including those received in camps.  The applications were received in form 6, 7, 8 and 8A and their data entry is over and the processing is in progress.

The elections will be held on April 17, 2014 between 7 am to 6 pm.

Shobha Karandlaje has submitted her nomination from Bharathiya Janatha Party for Udupi Chikmagalur Lok Sabha Constituency on March 19, 2014.

Considering January 1, 2014, the voters list prepared with the picture of the voters and published on January 31, 2014 will be used for election.  As per the list, there were 6,61,364 male and 6,89,833 female voters in Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency, 48 voters belonging to 'other' category. The total number of voters is 13,51,245.

The entry of the voter is mandatory in the election list and mere voter’s ID will not entitle the voters to exercise the franchise.

There were 1059 booths in the Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency and their inspection has already been completed.  Besides that the video recording of the booths and the details were sent to the presidents of political parties. The booths have been divided as Naxal, hyper sensitive, sensitive, and general by the police commissioner.   

As regards Udupi constituency, 1540 ballot units and 1210 units were supplied by E L company and their inspection process and videography were held between Feb 2, 2014 and March 3, 2014.  As regards Chikmagalur district, 1340 CU and 1710 BU were approved.
Regarding Udupi district, the EVMs were supplied on March 20, 2014 with the help of Randomnization software to the taluk.

As per the direction of the Supreme Court, the option ‘None of the above’ is added in the last panel.  Those who do not wish to vote for any of the candidates can make use of the option.

Flying squad and static surveillance team leaders were entrusted with powers under section 21 of 1973 of the Special Executive Magistrate till the elections get over under government order HD/161/SST/2014 dated March 15, 2014.

A single window committee is formed to permit election gatherings. A committee is also formed to permit vehicles of candidates and political parties.

The committee consists of Tahsildar, Assistant Election officer, Circle inspector, Taluk panchayat executive official, corporation official and motor vehicle inspector.

The parties and the candidates should take permission from the concerned tahsildar for their vehicles.

A single windows committee is formed on district level and they will be given permission only for vehicles in Udupi constituency.

The committee consists of district commissioner and assistant election officer in Udupi, additional police commissioner, chief planning official, zilla panchayat, Udupi, regional transport officer, Udupi, mayor and chief official of the corporation.

The limit of expenditure of a candidate is Rs 70 lac.

A district expenditure monitoring committee is formed to monitor the expenditure of the candidate.  The committee will function as per the directives of Election Commission.

A meeting of the committee was held on March 20 to discuss about the permission relating to publicity.

A committee is formed for the awareness of voters.
