Udupi, Jun 8: Ashok Suvarna, a resident of Kote village near Katapadi here, who in a heroic act saved 3 fishermen from drowning when the latter were fighting for life in the middle of the sea last week, was presented with "Kadavalveera" award on Wednesday June 7.

The award was given by Mogaveera Youth Organizations and was presented by noted entrepreneur G Shankar at a ceremony held at Shamili Auditorium.

Ashok Suvarna had saved 3 fishermen of "Dhanalakshmi" boat who were fighting for life with a help of a diesel can in the middle of the sea, on Sunday May 28 night.  The fishermen were stranded in the middle of the sea after their boat sank owing to heavy storm and raging sea.  While three of them managed to stay afloat with the help of the diesel can, three others, that is, Anand Baikady, Jagannath Kunder Baikady and Chandra Bhatkal were not that lucky.  They drowned and their bodies were traced only after 3-4 days.

Ashok Suvarna too was coming back from fishing on the same night. Owing to heavy rains and storm, the sea had turned rough.  So most of the boats which were in the middle of the sea were trying their best to reach the shore at the earliest. However, some of the boats sank and the fishermen drowned.  However, Ashok went to the rescue of these 3 fishermen without caring for his own life and finally he managed to pull them off from the deep waters.

Presenting the award, G Shankar said that Ashok should be presented with national-level award for bravery as he had saved three fishermen even when he himself was fighting for life amidst raging waves and incessant rains.

The ceremony was presided over by the organization district president Satish Amin Padukere.  Ramchandra Kunder, president of the Malpe Mechanized Boat Fisheries Organization and Sudhakar Kotian were the chief guests on the occasion.

Gopal R K welcomed the gathering and Ramesh Kidiyoor read the citation. Secretary Prakash Suvarna Katpadi proposed the vote of thanks while Navin S K compered the programme.
