Udupi, Mar 28: Through a judgment delivered on Monday March 24, the district and sessions court here sentenced a person to life imprisonment. The quantum of sentence was announced after evidences and witnesses on hand were found to be sufficient to prove the man’s guilt.

Judge of the court, B M Angadi, also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on Vasudeva Naik (51) from Totadamane in Kabyady in Badagabettu village, in addition to life imprisonment.

Naik was facing the charge of tying a noose made of nylon rope around the neck of his son, Vishwas Naik (10), who was asleep in the middle room of his home at Kabyadimane at around 12 midnight on May 4, 2011. He had passed this rope through the hook of the ceiling fan, and tied the other end of the tope to the iron rod of the window, to ensure that his son died of asphyxiation. Naik’s wife was not at home when this dastardly act was committed.

During the investigation, the policemen from Manipal station where a case was filed, found that Naik had suspected the character of his wife, and had decided to kill Vishwas, assuming that he was not his offspring. The then inspector of the station, H D Kulkarni, had headed the investigation, and filed charge sheet in the court. Public prosecutor, T S Jithuri, had presented the case on behalf of the prosecution.
