Du Plessis, Chandimal suspended for a match each

Chittagong, March 28 (IANS): South Africa and Sri Lanka captains Faf du Plessis and Dinesh Chandimal were suspended for one match each Friday while their players were fined after both sides maintained slow over-rates during their ICC World Twenty20 Group 1 encounters at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium here Thursday.

South Africa were earlier fined for being two overs short against New Zealand March 24 while Sri Lanka were short by one over against New Zealand in Pallekele Nov 21, 2013.

A team captain found guilty of two minor over-rate offences within a year receives a one-match suspension for the immediately subsequent match.

According to Article 2.5.1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel governing minor over-rate offences, players are fined 10 percent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time with the captain fined double.

Match referee David Boon imposed the suspensions and penalties after both sides were ruled to be one over short of their targets against the Netherlands and England, respectively, when time allowances were taken into consideration. As such, the captains have been fined 20 percent each of their match fees and their players have received 10 percent fines.

Du Plessis pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanctions so there was no need for a formal hearing. Du Plessis will miss his side’s match against England March 29.

Chandimal pleaded not guilty to the offence and a full hearing was held Friday with Boon appointed to adjudicate. Following the hearing, the charge and proposed penalty were upheld by Boon and Chandimal will miss Sri Lanka’s final Super 10 match against New Zealand March 31.

South Africa defeated the Netherlands by six runs Thursday while Sri Lanka lost to England by six wickets.
