Worker dies at Brazil's World Cup stadium

Sao Paulo, March 30 (IANS): A construction worker died in an accident at Sao Paulo's Itaquerao World Cup Stadium.

Firefighters said Fabio Hamilton da Cruz died Saturday after falling 15 metres from a temporary stand being built at the venue. It is the eighth death reported at Brazil's 12 World Cup stadiums and the third in four months at the Itaquerao, reports Xinhua.

In a statement, construction firm Fast Engenharia denied negligence saying strict health and safety requirements were met by all their workers.

The incident comes as Brazil faces increasing pressure to complete its World Cup stadia. Three venues remain incomplete despite a December 2013 deadline imposed by FIFA. The Itaquerao will stage the opening match of the tournament between Brazil and Croatia June 12.

In December, two workers died at the stadium when a crane collapsed. Officials did not say whether Saturday's accident would cause further delays.
