Mangalore: Speeding truck topples at bus stop - Two dead

Mangalore, Mar 31: Two persons died and two others sustained serious injuries when an Eicher goods vehicle carrying plywood sheets went out of control and toppled over them while they were waiting at a bus stop near Kudremukh gate at Panambur here on Monday March 31.

Among the two dead, one is a woman. Another person sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital.

The accident occured when the truck bearing registeration number KL 48 E 6401 plying from Mangalore towards Panambur lost control when it reached the bus stop and toppled. Eyewitnesses said the truck driver was speeding.

The plywood sheets which were in the truck tumbled out and fell over the persons waiting at the bus stop. Two persons were killed on the spot while two others were injured.

It is said that one of the two injured may be the driver of the truck.

Though their identities are not yet known, sources said that the persons who died were coolie workers and were waiting to catch a bus home.

Panambur police arrived at the spot. The locals helped in moving the plywood sheets.

    I pass by this place daily for work. The temporary signboards which have been put up following work being carried out are very misleading considering its a national highway. While the driver of the truck is clearly at fault, appropriate signboards should be placed advising motorists to slow down as work is in progress.

    It's nothing unexpected. the way it's handled and managed , it was sure of such a disaster would really happen. The sign boards wrongly guiding, now and then routes are changed, kept the barriers here and there... no scientific and proper way top manages heavy NH traffic... by seeing these it was evident such an accident would happen. 50 % error must be from the driver and other 50 % for the in proper sign boards... suddenly coming on your way... suddenly shows right turn,... or suddenly tells you left turn... driver would have lost control and unfortunately those kooli people came in front. What a tragic yaar. Just standing on the bus stop to reach home, has left them to their end. RIP. Engineer on the project. please plan properly. Align the sign boards, put proper reflectors... ensure all safety measures are taken care while uting such major projects.

    99% 0f Indian drivers who take driving test abroad on the basis of indian licence will not pass the test.That includes the approving inspector the supervisor and the driving instructor.With such sorry state of affairs no wonder indian driving licence are not recognised abroad.Indian licence is valid only in the circus. Our traffic police have no clue on driving rules.I feel very disgusted.Subject on civic and basic rules must start in schools from std 1 itself .

    Right Gomes brother. Indian driving licences have no value outside the country cause most of them are given without passing the test or even sitting at the wheel, just with money under the table. The RTO is the highest corrupt industry in India.

    A very sad incident...may their soul rest in peace and God give strength to their families. Speed thrills but kills, we are seeing these kinds of warning signs on road sides, but overlooked by the haste and self belief.

    Laws are made during the British Raj
    That time 99 % motorist were British. so the laws were made in favor of the motorist.

    Lack of ability of Driving, fearlessness of Authorities, Illiteracy are the reasons of this kind of Accidents. Every year School Childrens were used for Road safety. unless using Children, take these killer drivers for Road Safety Marathon!

    Such a tragic accident should not have happened. May their departed souls rest in peace. I observed that in this junction some overhead structural work is going on and there are no proper signal boards which leads to confusion. Though the truck was on over speed, it may be noted that it is a National Highway where certain speed need to be maintained. No proper control of traffic by the officials at that spot. Unless and until traffic not properly controlled at the spot, this junction will be a death spot....!

    our politicians have also have stake in ill gotten money. Further, private transport/bus operators have the backing of bureaucracy and politicians. No law or rule of the land is applicable to these recalcitrant private operators whose main theme is to amass wealth. Poor & voiceless commuters and the public are only scape goats.

    Death comes like a thief. One need not go in the vehicles to die by accident. Waiting for the bus stop also is enough. We are in this world for a short time. Why live with anger, hate, jealousy? I have got this Vairagya. May the family members of the deceased get strength to bear the loss of their loved ones.

    Fully agree with capt.Cornelio, udyavar. RTO and the Police are fully corrupt, resulting in such accidents. Just a correction on your last statement, we have a Congress Government and the money goes beyond just the SP's office - my sympathies are with the poor constables who toil day and night in rain or shine, they are overworked and underpaid, and many of them are forcibly asked to collect bribes, all they may get at the end of the day is some chillar to buy a pint of cheap whisky.

    Thanks to our corrupt RTO for granting them license.in Mangalore 90
    percent of the drivers do not know the basics and they are a threat to the people on the road.night time they will come with full head lights.no one cares of any one and RTO/police busy collecting bribes on the highway in open daylight.That money reaches right upto SPs office.
