Udupi: Policeman ends life after daughter's engagement breaks

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (HB/KK)

Udupi, Apr 1: In a tragic incident, a policeman allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself here on Monday March 31.

The deceased, Ramesh Shetty (59), was residing at Doddanagudde police quarters, and was serving as assistant sub-inspector (ASI) in Amasebail. He had another 8 months before retirement.

On Monday evening, he went for a bath and hanged himself from the bathroom roof using a cloth. When he did not emerge from the bathroom for a long time, his mother grew worried and on checking, found him hanging.

He was immediately rushed to AV Baliga Memorial hospital in Doddanagudde then to KMC hospital, Manipal, where he was pronounced brought dead.

Sources said that Ramesh's daughter was about to get married, but the alliance broke at the last minute, which pushed him into depression.

He is survived by his wife, daughter and son, who is studying LLB.

A case has been registered in Udupi town police station.

SP Boralingaiah and M G Nayak visited the mortuary at Manipal.

The funeral was held on Tuesday April 1 at Chandu maidan, Udupi. DySP Prabhudev Mane, additional SP Santhosh Kumar Mane, RPI Umesh and Thimmappa Gowda, SI Madhu and others were present.

Good taught Jeniffer on the ratio of boys vs girls , if only the Indian society understands this simple arithmetic, then society would improve much more when it comes to such issues. We live in a small world filled with such social stigmas unless we come out and get a broader view it would all look very compelling to go ahead and end up lives.........

The 'Agree' no. 7 was from me to this good taught

Being a responsible father and having certain expectations of Dignity and having emotional concerns is natural for a man. But one should have a wise thought that a proposal getting rejected is much better than having such relations and ending up with disgrace in marital status. One must also understand that certain liking and disliking of the 2 parties (Especially between the boy and the girl) may vary and hence it may not be a suitable choice between those 2 parties only. The world is wide and choices are many and so one should not give up.

The incident here is just a moment of the father to do or not and the step taken was a wrong choice. Should have given a second thought and his life would have continued. May his Soul rest in peace and may the girl find the right Guy.

So very true, it is curse of the innocent. Only those who have dealt with the Police in the Police Station know the truth and the pain they are given to innocent people. Bribe and the Police will take your side. May His Soul rest in peace.

He might have handled so many suicidal cases like this. But when it comes to his own life, as a father, he couldn’t bare the burnt. Though suicidal is not the solution, but as a beloved father we can understand his pain. Let us give our heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family and may GOD bless his soul in peace forever

Dowry is a great pain in some community which is still continues. I feel pity on such idiots take so much money even though poor parents give away their loving daughter with so much pain. Society never understands that only need baadi or aasti or something else which is the great burden on parents of those girls and when fails results are like this innocent father. I feel sad to see such death. god RIP.

Yes Dear Agnel, Agreed. But we can sacrifice this hardcore tradition too. Just for example, I am the first person in our locality & in my family stopped taking dowry. That was long back in 1998, but ever since nobody took dowry in our locality nor in my family too. It’s already 16 Years now and I hope that this tradition will prevail forever at least in our locality and in my family too

Feeling so sad for the departed soul and also for his family.May God bless his family and give more courage to bear the loss.

As per me the most cursed department is of Police. The people got harassed by the department Curse it ,people giving bribe will curse it ,people got beaten by the police curse it ,innocents family curse it.in brief getting curse by all level of people in wholesale.

The result, we can see is their family get effected.Their children goes out of track. Their medical expenses become more, their retired life is horrible and the end is horrible.

Practicing more humanity and partial on truth is the only way to overcome this.

    Hope and wish so

A fraction of second's bad thought can induce a person to take hard decisions. Sometimes it happens with everyone. Whether s/he is educated or uneducated. Once the bad thought controlled, s/he may not think to take that hard decision. May be policemen didn't discuss the problem with his family members Sad RIP

If such a tough and disciplined police officer falls victim to personal matters, what about an ordinary human being.
Sometimes, mental depression is worse than physical torture.

May his soul rest in peace.

Very very sad. May his soul rest in peace. Being a Police Officer, he may have seen so many such incidents in his walks of life. After all, we are human beings...everybody have emotional feelings. If we do not control our emotions and feelings, we lose our heart and end life life like this officer, which is still more miserable for the family left behind.....May God console them and give strength to lead life further...

From the day daughter was born some parents start worrying about her marriage & its expense. They will make all sacrifices in order to save money for her marriage & when things go wrong at the crucial stage breakdown happens experiencing humiliation.
Parents should understand that marriage is not the final solution. It's just a change of phase. Until you breath you have to experience all types of emotions every day.
