Udupi, Apr 2: Former President of India Dr A P J Abdul Kalam on Wednesday April 2 interacted with students during a SVEEP programme organized by the district administration at SMVITM Bantakal here and urged young voters to exercise their franchise with wisdom and courage.
"What is the vision of youth and how can we make it useful? We remember people because of their contribution to the world. First we need to know our goal and what we want to be remembered for," he said.
Interacting freely with the students, he said, "Student must tell themselves that 'I have wings and everything is possible by acquire knowledge and hard work. Do not be afraid, only then will it be possible to achieve."
He spoke on the topic 'Empowering nation through technological innovation' and said, "Students of such (technological) courses do not become employment seekers but employment generators. System integration, system management, production and system development are the key words for an engineer. He can integrate only through using four concepts - environment, economy, idea, and people - these are inter-related.
"Growing inflation in the country, effects of global market, earthquakes and Tsunami have changed the idea of safeguarding the nation. Convergence of technology like communication, information, biotechnology, nanotechnology will lead to emergence of new advanced technology," he added.
Advising the students to cast their valuable votes carefully, he said, "There are 150 crore first time voters in the country. Cast your vote carefully, encourage your parents, teachers and others to vote too. Right to choose the government is the most privileged right and you have to make it a success.
"Vote with wisdom and courage, exercise your vote and bring a good government in the nation," he added.
"Hard work, having a great aim, acquiring knowledge continuously through books and teachers, and perseverance will lead your to success. An individual must be the captain of a problem and not let the problem be the captain. He must defeat all problems, only then can he achieve success," he advised.
He concluded his speech with a question-answer session with college students.
DC Dr Muddumohan, CEO of zilla panchayat Kanakavalli, SP Dr Boralingaiah, vice-chancelleor Shrivasta and others were all present on the occasion.
Sri Vishwavallabhateertha Swamiji presided over the programme. Ratna Kumar, secretary of SSVMET, welcomed the gathering and Prof Radhkrishna, college principal delivered the vote of thanks.

Udupi, Apr 2: Former President of India Dr A P J Abdul Kalam on Wednesday April 2 addressed students during the 28th annual convocation of TA Pai Management Institute at KMC Greens, Manipal and said that students should ponder over what they want to be remembered as.
In his address, he said, "May I be the protector of those without one, may I be a bridge or a boat to shift those who wish to cross the sea. Students should have a goal and a clear idea of what field you want to become a leader in. Sustainable development ties together concern for natural resources and the social and economic challenges faced by humanity. So we need to focus on sustainable development of our nation."
He further said, "Ignited minds are powerful sources. Mission and vision are complex problems to a creative leader. Technology brings us come together and education enables us to have boundaryless view on all things. Being a citizen of India we must think how are we going to have a peaceful and prosperous world.
"By 2020 India will be a developed country. Agriculture is a tertiary sector, which contributes a lot for the GDP growth. In approximately 6,000 villages, 70% of the people are living without social connectivity. I wish to make our government transparent and free from corruption. For that let’s make our home corruption-free first," he said.
He encouraged the engineering students with his vibrant thoughts, and said it is they who represent the upcoming energy of this country. He appreciated the institution for training thousands of students and making them capable of rendering their services abroad.
"There are five areas which are crucial for the overall development of nation - agriculture, education and healthcare, mass communication and technology, self-reliance and confidence," he said.
He concluded his speech saying, "What we are remembered for is more important in our life; just as we remember TMA Pai for developing Manipal."
The programme began with a prayer. Around 308 students and parents attended the function. H S Ballal distributed the convocation certificates.
