Cruzeiro keep Libertadores hopes alive

Santiago (Chile), April 4 (IANS): Brazilian champions Cruzeiro kept alive their hopes of progressing to the Copa Libertadores knockout phase with a 2-0 victory over Universidad de Chile.

Bruno Rodrigo opened the scoring in the 16th minute at the Estadio Nacional de Chile Thursday before Miguel Samudio made it 2-0 on the stroke of halftime, reports Xinhua.

Both sides were reduced to 10 men in the final minutes when Matius Caruzzo and then Samudio were sent off for second yellow-card offences.

The result leaves Universidad second in Group 5 with nine points, two ahead of third-placed Cruzeiro. Uruguay's Defensor Sporting lead the group with 10 points.

Cruzeiro need to defeat Peru's Real Garcilaso at home by at least two goals Wednesday to advance to the second round.
