Mangalore: Rain in some parts of coast brings respite from heat

Mangalore, Apr 5: Several places in Karkala taluk of Udupi district received heavy rain coupled with thunder, lightning, and strong wind for an hour on Friday April 4. Light rain was also experienced in some parts of Beltangady taluk. This welcome rain provided much-needed relief to the people from sweltering heat. Kaup and Katapadi regions in Udupi district were the other areas which were fortunate enough to get good rain on Friday.

Places like Natekal, Naringana, Mudipu and Ira in Dakshina Kannada district received some rain on Thursday night. However, the city and surround areas, which are reeling because of hot and humid weather, did not get any rain, although there was light drizzle for a few minutes early morning on Thursday.

Places like Bajagoli, Bailoor, Hebri, Mala, Kervase, Idu, Sanoor, Shilalu, Ajekar, Waranga and Bolain Karkala taluk received good rain, with some adjoining areas getting drizzle. Because of lightening, the wall of the residence of Anni Poojary in Idu village developed cracks. In Kervase, several areca nut trees got uprooted because of wind.

Fallen tree created traffic bottlenecks for sometime at Muroor, Hirgana near Karkala. Many villages had to go without any power supply the whle night because of rain.

The meteorological department has predicted light rain coupled with thunder in several places in southern hinterland of the state during the next two to three days. The department said it has made this forecast based on thick clouds that have been seen over the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea, and detection of low pressure areas around them.
