Udupi, Apr 8: Gopalayya Appu Koteyar (67), and his wife Sunanda Gopal Koteyar (62) are yet to get the right to vote despite having resided in Udupi for 11 years.

They came here from Maharashtra over a decade ago and despite having all the essential documents, are unable to exercise their franchise, allegedly due to the panchayat’s fault.

Addressing a press meet here on Tuesday April 8, Gopalayya said that a couple of days ago, he received a letter from the village tahsildar informing him that his name and that of his wife were missing from the voters' list. The letter apologized for this error and added that their names would be enrolled next year after the revaluation process.

Gopalayya shared his feelings with the media and said that he had cancelled both their names in the voters' list in Mumbai but still they had not been added to the list here despite submitting all required details to the panchayat. “In the previous year, the BJP and the Congress promised to ensure our enrollment but this has not yet been completed,” he said.

He said that he sent a copy to the authorities concerned also and said that being an educated and informed person, if he was facing such a situation, what would the situation of poor people who might be caught in this web be.

"Voting is my birthright and no one can snatch it from me. In the coming days, I will exercise my right to file a petition," he said.

At present he lives in Manipal with his family and is an active member of the local AAP unit.

He concluded saying that he was a senior citizen and must get his voter ID ahead of the Lok Sabha election failing which both he and his wife would go on a hunger strike on Friday April 11 at 10.30 am at the DC office.

Dear Sachidanand Shetty, Sitting in Dubai, please do not comment without knowing the fact as to how our Panchayat/Muncipal/BBMP staff who r most lazy people working in their offices. Just for your information, they don't care to whom
U R going to vote. In fact just
before coming to Melbourne, I visited the BBMP office in Bangalore, to check whether the Voters Card of my sister-in-law was ready. To my surprise the officials there, were playing in their Mobiles/ I Pads & were giving negative answers. They r most irresponsible & lazy people. Most of the Voters Cards issued by them do not contain the correct details of the Voters. So please do not comment for the sake of Commenting.

Election Commission has to arrange to issue a temporary voter ID through local bodies after verification of their whereabouts for the voting of these people for coming election. Their details should be noted by the officials at the concerned booth during their franchise and a permanent voter ID should be issued after the election. Voting is the right of every citizen. No citizen should be deprived of their franchise for missing of their name in voter list or for lack of voter ID. A major publicity is to be started by the Election Commision immediately in this regard.

Dear Mr.Shetty, i'm agree on your agenda. Even a few years back, I faced the same issue like not excitsing my name in Voter ID. I voted first time, but when seond time election came, my name is ommited from voter list, even i'm having voter ID & i'm staying on my adrees by birth too. I heard from others that, its due to BJP politicians influence. But as per my knowledge EC is not an agent of BJP/CONGRESS/any other political parties.. So why this injustice happens with Chritsians/Muslims.. When the time of TAX pay, government officals stand infront of gate to take TAX.. When we need any government facility, we have to run all the officers door & take approval, but at end all approval done, then there is not fund or rule is widraw.. Is it our right to live act is properly implemented in our country....???

Dear Ajja, Ajji, instead of going for the hunger strike, just announce that you will vote for BJP or CONGiss and you will see that your Voter ID will be prepared with no time and delivered to your door steps….. Going one step further, if you say “I am Hindu” then BJP may come first to help you out, if you say “I am Christian” then CONGiss may come first or if you say “I am Muslim” then JDs will come first…. So, there are so many ways to get your Voter ID. Just imagine in India, if Bangladeshi are getting “Aadhaar Card” means Voter ID is nothing…..

    Good One Mr. Shetty.
In fact, they should stop paying tax to the government first and then voice their demands. In some other states, maybe these people would have got not 1 but many voter ids plus gifts/cash etc.
