Mangalore, Jun 15: More than a thousand beedi workers took the streets on Thursday Jun 15 morning. protesting assistant labour commissioner  T Srinivas' decision that beedi workers cannot be paid minimum wages owing to lack of inspectors in the labour department.



Thousands of beedi workers who came on vehicles from all over the district blocked the traffic and sat on the road in front of assistant labour commissioner's office at Bendorewell.  The picketing was organized by South Canara Beedi Workers Federation.





Federation president J Balkrishna Shetty, secretary Sukumar led the protest.  K R Shriyan, B Madhav, Yadav Shetty were also present during the picketing by the beedi workers.

The police who too arrived in large numbers to control the situation arrested the agitators and released them later.
