Lightning strike kills three children at Chikmagalur

Bangalore, Apr 12: Several places in Chikmagalur, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Mysore, Mandya and Hassan districts, in addition to some places spread over other parts of the state, received good rain on Friday April 11. The rain, which was coupled with heavy wind and lightning, in addition to bringing relief from scorching heat, also proved to fatal to some.

Three boys, who were playing football in Giddenahalli in Chikmagalur district died after lightning struck them. Six more, who were in the company of these boys, were injured. The youngsters had taken shelter under a tree after skies opened up all of a sudden when they were playing football. Due to lightning, Basavaraj (13), Prasanna (14), and Yatish (14), lost their lives. The other six boys, who suffered injuries of different degrees, were shifted to the district hospital at Chikmagalur.

Todikana and Aranthod in Sullia taluk in Dakshina Kannada reported copious rains. Even Sullia town, Panja, Kadaba and Subrahmanya received moderate rain along with thunder and lightning. Telephone lines went dead due to rain in these places.

Uppinangady and Nelyady in Puttur taluk got some rain on Friday evening, while Moodbidri received light drizzle. Beltangady and Ujire regions got moderate rain, with Kundapur taluk of Udupi district experiencing cloudy weather.

Report from Hassan district said 33 sheep died due to lightning at Arkalgud.

    ONE SHOULD NOT STAND UNDER A TREE WHILE LIGHTNING STRIKES BECAUSE IT TARGETS TALL SINGLE TREE IN AN OPEN GROUND. PEOPLE SHOULD LIE DOWN ON THE GROUND WHEN THERE IS A POSSIBILITY OF HEAVY RAIN WITH THUNDER AND LIGHTNING
