Mangalore: AAP activists protest toll hike at Brahmara Kootlu

Mangalore, Apr 18: The district unit of Aam Admi Party (AAP), on Friday April 18, protested against the collection of higher toll charges at Brahmara Kootlu toll gate in spite of an order by the deputy commissioner (DC) prohibiting this.

As per the election code of conduct, the DC had strictly ordered against hiking of toll charges, but the contractors, blatantly disobeying the instructions, have increased the rates. The protestors shouted slogans against the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and demanded that the vehicle drivers pay the old rates.

Speaking to the media, AAP’s MP candidate M R Vasudeva condemned the move of the contractors. He said, “It is daylight robbery. We had held a protest on April 1, 2014, because they hiked the charges when the election code of conduct was in effect. The deputy commissioner had responded to this and he had written that the toll should not be increased. Even after 17 days of the DC’s order, they haven’t followed it and hence, the protest was organized.”

Vasudeva had spoken to the NHAI over phone and demanded that they change the newly revised board and replace it with the old board which has the old rates.

On this occasion, Gopalakrishna Melanta and police inspector Jayanth Kalooru were present.

AAP Press Meet

Hours after the protest, Vasudeva, addressing the press meet at the AAP district office in the city, said, “Though the DC has ordered against increase in toll charges, NHAI and its contractors are collecting higher rates from vehicle drivers. This is violation of the election code of conduct. This is like daylight robbery and ‘organized loot’. AAP will  go to court. If the price rate is increased even after May 17, 2014, we will gather information through RTI and file a PIL.”

Regretfully, while Oscar is the Central Minister for Transport, Highways..etc, and his state transport colleague from Congress-I Ramalinga Reddy is a well known don), even the two Congress-I ministers in the central Railway ministries are from Karnataka, shameless, corrupt dacoits that have not done an iota of work for our state or SK, unlike what Lallu and Mamata did in the past for their respective states!
No wonder the key financiers of politicians like Oscar, Poojary, Muniappa, Rizwan are overnight millionaire contractors like Gopal Krishna Melanta, who as you mentioned correctly, was living in a small rented flat on the Bejai New road, just 1 year ago, but now has a palatial house, very close to the original rental home!

This Tollgate Contractor was living in a small rented flat on the Bejai New road before getting this Toll contract. But today he is a multi-millionaire within a short period of five years only through toll collection at Pane-Mangaluru Bridge. So, just guess what may be the tender amount payable to Govt and what may be the actual toll collection. Now, by increasing the toll fees further, he will be billionaire shortly.

The strategic NH48 Mangalore to Bangalore Highway stands as a classic example of the repeated false promises by successive govt's.

While long stretches are absolutely suicidal and completely un-motorable, especially in the Shiradi Ghat section, it is a shame on Karnataka and South Kanara that all our MPs and Ministers have continued to offer mere promises. Just imagine, the present Union Cabinet Minister for Transport, Road and Highways and Labour and Employment is none other than Oscar Fernandes (among the 4 folks who are part of Sonia’s inner circle), who personally knows the pathetic condition of the highway and untold sufferings of the helpless passengers and vehicles!

Regretfully, both Oscar and his state colleague (Ramalinga Reddy) are known to be among the most corrupt and inefficient ministers we have ever witnessed. Moreover, what is shocking is that in the past Oscar as well as the state ministers have promised 100's of crores to repair the road and even sanctioned it: only to fill in their own pockets. To burn more salt on the wounds, just before the mode-of -conduct for elections came into effect the CM announced releasing of another 125 crores, under the disguise of making NH48 motorable, while the NHAI and its contractors continue to hike the toll!

Hats off to you guys. There is a party asking votes in the name of its PM candidate, other party in the name of secularism. Noone has any concerns about the people of their local region, not interested in their issues and problems except this party. Only party who has mentioned about local issues in their manifesto like netravathi river diversion, niddodi power plant. I wish all the very best to this leader. Hope he wins this constituency.

Our Karnataka national highways r still in pathetic conditions. But our Authorities r increasing toll fees without providing us smooth roads. I am sure even the toll amount collected, daily works out a huge amount, & not properly accounted, amounting to crores of rupees. Very soon we may hear another toll gate collection scam. Oscar has released Rs. 95 crores, the Karnataka state government has released another Rs. 5 crores & I also understand that Asian Development bank has loaned some more crores of rupees to repair maintain & concrete the Shiradi Ghat. But I understand this ghat is still in a very bad & in pathetic, unmotorable condition. I kindly request AAP to file an RTI to find out as to where this huge amount of money has gone. Hope we will not hear another huge Scam.

    AAP,

Failure is a stepping stone for success...start working for 2019 election right now before even votes for 2014 is counted...

2014-2019 ruling party BJP and official Opposition, CONgress are both corrupted to the core and holding a bucket for Ambani...Act as the official opposition party with whatever little strength you have and you will grow and become a formidable foe to both these corrupt suckers...

By the by pursue corrupt Moily and Gadkari even after they are defeated...and take it to logical conclusion...so future politicians are scared to steal public money...
