Mangalore, Apr 25: In the wee hours on Thursday April 24, thieves entered a house in Krishnapura seventh block near Suratkal, stole things of their choice, and decamped with the booty, even as family members remained asleep. Shariff (39), a contractor by profession, lost valuables and ornaments worth about five lac rupees in this case.
The thieves entered Shariff's home by cutting open the lock and bolt of the iron door in the rear side of the house. They stole a Rado watch from the bedroom of Shariff's father located at the basement, before taking away gold ornaments kept in an almirah in the northern room of the house. They rummaged through different things kept in the drawers and cupboards, before reaching the first floor room of Shariff's younger brother. They shoved aside a ten-year-old son of Shariff's brother, who was found sleeping there, to access the cupboard, from where they took away gold ornaments.
Before leaving home, the thieves abandoned the empty ornaments box in the verandah, and fancy ornaments of the children on the washing machine. The footwear of a thief was also found to have been left behind in a hurry. Two cell phones of Shariff were found thrown away near the coconut trees in the courtyard. Shariff told the police that as per his calculation, the theft had occurred between 2.30 and 3 pm, as he had reached home at 12 am and nothing unusual was observed when family members had got up at 2 am. His brother's wife, who woke at 3 am to feed water to her child, saw the door wide open and things lying scattered all around. She woke up other members of the family. By that time, a theft attempt had also happened at the neighbouring house, Shariff explained, and that the thieves, seeing that lights had been put on in Shariff's home, had run away.
Suratkal station house officer, M A Natraj, along with some other personnel, visited the spot and inspected the crime scene. The sniffer dogs did not proceed further than the neighbouring house. Finger print experts also visited the house.
