Bantwal, Apr 25: A massive protest was held at Brahmarakootlu toll gate here on Friday April 25 under the leadership of Bantwal taluk Nagarika Hitarakshana Samiti, demanding the shifting of the toll gate.

The protesters shouted slogans against high handedness of the staff and collection of irregular toll charges and demanded that the toll gate be shifted elsewhere. They blocked the road and stopped the collection of toll by entering the toll booth.

Samiti president and zilla panchayat member Chandraprakash Shetty said that the toll is being collected even though the four lane work is not completed here. "There is no space here and no basic facilities either. Under the circumstances this is an unauthorized toll gate and it should be shifted immediately," he demanded.

"As there is no computerized gate, the government is being cheated without disclosing accounts. Passengers also are unfairly charged more than the ones fixed rates. The personnel here have joined hands with political parties and are acting like rowdies with the commuers. At times the toll is being collected by showing gun.
If the toll gate is not shifted, the people themselves will have to take action," he warned.

Congress leader Harikrishna Bantwal addressed the protesters and said that it is illegal to construct toll plaza unless the highway work is completed. "The staff of the toll plaza treats the passengers in an uncivilized manner. As the toll plaza is constructed without proper technology, vehicles have to wait in long lines resulting in traffic jam," he said.

Zilla panchayat member M S Mohammed, Mamatha Gatty, and others spoke urging the shifting of the toll plaza and warned of large scale protests if the government fails to act.

B Padmashekar Jain, Mayilappa Salian, Abbas Ali, Padmashekar Jain, Prakash Shetty Thumbe, Pius L Rodrigues, Padmanabha Rai, Parameshwara, B K Idinabba, Madhusoodhan Shenoy, Sadashiva Bangera, Mohammed Sharif, Ramakrishna Alva and others were present.

When protests were going on one side, a group of youths went to the toll booths and asked vehicles drivers not to pay the toll. Some vehicles passed by without paying the toll. While a grim situation prevailed, Chandraprakash Shetty and police intervened and diffused the situation.

Protesters also sat on the road and blocked the traffic. A memorandum was submitted to the union minister of surface transport, chief minister of Karnataka, district incharge minister and project director of National Highway Authority of India through Bantwal taluk tahsildar Malleswamy and assistant commissioner Sadashiva Prabhu.

Sadashiva Prabhu who spoke after receiving the memorandum, promised that the demands would be scrutinized and further action taken. The protest was withdrawn after the assurance.

The traffic was affected for sometime due to the agitation. Police security was arranged in view of the protests.

on april 18 i went from this road for free..!!(toll gate was closed because of AAP protest).
before the toll gate was at panemangalore bridge, charge was 5rs oneway/10rs to way. when it re-open at Brahmarakootlu, they are charging 25/35rs!! looting people. Govt should ban this, this road about to complete by 2010 till now not completed, still they collect money. Panemangalore they collected toll more than 10years, but the govt board was reading 5 yrs contract(completing 5 yrs, they removed the board).
Salute AAP for their support and protest..

AAP did a small protest on April 1st and again on April 18th. They took up this issue for sake of people. They did not block the road.

Congress, on the other hand, are doing it for political gain. They are blocking road and creating difficulties for the commuters. Congress people are ruling and they are only holding the protest. so cheap!!!!

If the protestors are sincere and no politics behind it, why not all support and help remove the looting in name of toll booth. Common people all join hands together.

Putting up Toll in existing roads will find only in India. Every part of the world they construct a new road and put a toll to reduce traffic so that people are in a hurry can use this new road paying toll. I dont know what govt is doing with the money taken as Road tax (18% )which is very high in India , still we have to pay Toll for the Existing road, even from fuel There are three types of tax which Govt impose to the public Customs Duty – 4%
    Excise Duty -25%
    Sales VAT -17%
    Total Tax collected 46%.

First of all unable to understand that most of the protestors over here are congies and they are protesting against whom. They have their own govt in the state and central. Anyways such type of gimmick, doing dombrata and padayatra on the street has become part time job for congies now. Anyways please dont worry people after election result this will become your full time job.

By now they must have collected the atleast more than half of the amount that they have spent on this road. > 3 lacs pday and total amount spent is 169 cr. Surprisingly there was a hike in toll fare also recently. If this is the case why are we paying road tax from our salary?

After the election result is out, Janardhana Poojary will sit in first kiosk, JP Hegde in second kiosk and Oscar in 3rd kiosk.

All together they will collect GOOD TOLLS. This is their future plan.

Had these congis completed 90 KM Mlore-Kundapur 4 Lane stretch, we would have been seeing toll booths at:

    1. Surathkal
    2. Mulki.
    3. Udupi
    4. Brahmavar
    5. Kota.

Because of this Tollgate Traffic Jam was Caused for Four Hours last week only. Vehicles were stranded for more than Four Hours lining up beyond Pane-Mangalore Bridge.
Similarly last month Vehicles were stranded for five hours due to this tollgate and many people even missed their flight as they could not reach Bajpe in time.
so, better to remove this Toll plaza once for all. After all vehicle owners are paying Road Tax which is highest in the world . Then why again Toll is required ?

It is funny that these guys are protesting the toll booth. They have their government at center and state - so who are they protesting against? Unless the government is allowing, the toll booth cannot be installed. Look at the plight of the road from sampaje onwards towards sullia which is being done by KMC. Please go there and protest.

The contractor is running a toll mafia. Was running earlier at panemangalore bridge for donkey's years with self printed tickets. He also runs tolls in various places in Karnataka. How is it only that he qualifies to collect toll? Also the road at Bramarkotlu is not complete.

Sorry to say, Toll Collection of Life Time is passed in Loksabha when NDA was in Power in 2004 without a debate!
When HEFTY Road Tax is levied on vehicles, its robbing a citizen many times over by this toll.
This toll gate prevents 2 wheelers from commuting as they have put speed breakers on full road & 2 wheelers have no way of moving safely on pedestrian sandy 1 foot of bumpy side walk.
Provide Proper Footpaths & a small corridor for 2 wheelers on either side.
Start collection of Toll only after the completion of Highway.

Our man from South Kanara, Mr. Oscar Fernandes, the renowned Union Cabinet Minister for Transport, Road and Highways (with additional charge of Labour and Employment), is very poor (after decades of Cong-I rule) and badly needs the toll for survival.

Don’t worry, while the minister has been laughing his way to the bank along with the high-handed highway contractors, the elusive 4-lane highway work will be completed by the next new Govt!
