Bantwal, Apr 28: Collection of toll at the toll plaza set up by National Highways Authority of India at Brahmarakootlu on national highway 66, which had been suspended following attack by vandals on Saturday April 27, resumed on Sunday.

The contractors decided to open the toll collection windows, after the district superintendent of police (SP), who visited the spot following a series of disturbances at this toll plaza, promised to provide security by deputing personnel from the reserve police force.

Gopalakrishna Melanta, who holds contract for toll collection at this plaza, said that the collection had begun based on the promise of the police department. Additional policemen have already been posted at the gate, and the work of conducting repairs and replacement relating to things that were either damaged or destroyed, has been undertaken.

The policemen said that in spite of launching widespread hunt for nabbing the culprits involved with the disturbances which occurred at the plaza on Saturday, they have yet to taste any success. SP, Dr Sharanappa, has camped at B C Road to guide the teams involved with the above incident. Different teams are conducting searches for two of the accused, whose actions were caught by the closed circuit tv cameras installed at the gate.

For the police department, this incident has posed a challenge, as there are allegations that repeated attacks on the gate could be possible only because of the failure of the police department. The SP, who has camped at the town police station of Bantwal, is personally supervising the law and order situation in the area, and has lent a sense of urgency to the investigation.

One of the accused was injured during the said incident at the toll plaza, and he got admitted into a hospital in Mangalore. The policemen, who have information about this, are waiting near the hospital to arrest him as soon as he is discharged by the hospital, it is said. The police calculation is that his arrest will make it easier to catch hold of others involved with the crime.

For the last 22 years, almost all the toll gates on the various highways in the coastal belt & Ghats have been managed exclusively by a bunch of most privileged, corrupt contractors (many are actually blacklisted!) including Gopalakrishna Melanta, Ibrahim Kutty, Mohammed Hajee, Gopal Nayak, Radhakrishna Naik, M.G. Hussain, Nagaraja Devadiga, Bantwal Sanjeev Poojary and Thimmappa Gumpalaje. The average revenue from each toll is considered to be around a tantalizing amount of 18 lacs to 25 lacs per day, but only a small fraction of it is d as toll to the NHAI, hence the toll gates remain in existence forever, in total connivance with the politicians, police and utive.

While none of the so-called Toll Plaza’s have the most basic amenities, despite the heavy fees, collected from helpless travelers under the disguise of facilities, four-lane conversion and highway construction costs..etc, the NHAI and central transport departments are totally quiet since they are hand-in-league with the massive pilferage and corruption. In fact, Gopalakrishna Melanta himself had called a press conference to announce that immediately after the genuine public agitation at Brahmarakootlu, none other than the Union Transport and Highways Minister Oscar Fernandes personally called him and Superintendent of Police Sharanappa, to provide security to the contractor!

Despite the week long protests by members of the public, common man, the shameless MLA’s and Congress-I ministers from the district had requested the state home minister to provide District Armed Reserve personnel for security! It may be noted that the initial peaceful protests were successfully led by the AAP and later hijacked by some goons belonging to the local congress-I in order to create vandalism & chaos.

What is regretful is that, all these crooked contractors who pay regular hafta to the Congress-I leaders from ZP to cabinet level, intentionally hire illiterate manpower from North Karnataka and not locals.

The quality of highways is totally poor & unplanned in south canara as planners & engineers could not do the work smoothly due to intervention of many influential & 'wise' people of DK.Even touching or removing a petty shop is also not so easy.Accordingly you have to divert the road to save his petty shop or worship places, houses etc!

There is always another side to the story. Why are the toll operators attacked every now and then, I am not endorsing these attacks, however, the reasons behind the attack must be know.
I pass this toll gate every week while driving to and fro to Mangalore. At least some of the toll gate staff must be taught to behave with customers.
As Mr. BS Shetty says, we must learn a lot from the toll gates between Bangalore Hassan stretch.

now the matter is whether toll raised or reduced?
There is no safety in the road and the toll gate, one of the toll collectors at Panemangalore(previous toll booth at this area) died of hit and run case. One night toll collector stopped a lorry and lorry driver did not stop the vehicle/went over him.
