Mangalore: Landslip at construction site - One dead, two injured

Mangalore, Apr 30: One labourer was killed and two others seriously injured in a landslip at a construction at Derebail here on Wednesday April 30.

The deceased has been identified as Kashiyappa (40) from Naragunda taluk, Badami.


The incident occured at the construction site of Blueberry Platinum apartments under Victoria Builders. Sources said that the incident occured due to the negligence of the site engineer.

Mahadevi, wife of Kashiyappa, and Swami Nayak (32) were injured in the incident. They were rushed to AJ hospital.

It is said that the labourers were digging a hole near a wall when the mud suddenly gave way and the wall collapsed on them. They were trapped in the hole for sometime.

Fire personnel rushed to the spot and were able to rescue two of the three labourers. Kashiyappa could not be saved.

There are other houses near the construction site and neighbours expressed fears that they may collapse too.

    The builders have money power & they dig very near to the existing buildings or compounds vertically, causing these disasters.
    What might happen with rainy season just a month away.
    Let the builders deposit a heavy amount to compensate the victims & those buildings which might get damaged or collapse within a year or two.

    Shocking to see such gross violation of basic civil construction safety norms in the heart of Mangluru!! Surprised why the surrounding residents were sleeping all the while when excavation was going on so perilously close to their premises, should have immediately bought a stay order in their own safety interest!!

    Such type of hasty constructions flouting basic safety norms will lead to a lot of problems later on as time passes which people buying flats will not even imagine now the gravity of the dangers of such constructions, reminds me of Utarakhand washout!!

    May the poor worker's soul RIP!!

    They should be attacked if the don't follow SOP.....also the government should not allow multi story buildings to come up in those localities where there is a threat for life and other buildings......

    Shocking and sad tragedy. It just shows that in Mangalore all rules and laws can be flouted if you have money to grease the palms of these corrupt officials in the corporation. Or else how could such a project involving excavation work close to neighboring properties be given approval ?
    Such incidents will never happen in developed countries without due diligence to safety rules. Sadly, this is Mangalore where corruption is rife. This poor victim had died in vain . I hope there is now a thorough enquiry to see who in the corporation approved such plans, do the builders/ engineers have a valid license ? No construction work should be allowed to proceed till the whole site deemed safe to human and property. This sad incident should ring alarm bells for anyone who is interested in buying these apartments which is built on such flimsy foundations!!!

    Tragic, tragic.Apoor daily wager has lost life because someone planned wrong and started working.Here the first Person to be asked and punished is the one who gave the licence .did that Person did nt see the plan properly and the engineers and planers as well.The house behind is half about to fall.why did they not give Support so that earth do not slipdown before starting digging?nobody saw it and ?Heartfelt sympathy to the Family of deceased.

    The government officials who approved this project and the constructors have to be held responsible and has to be punished for the huge loss.The hardworking laborers are not even provided with the life protection. Their lives are treated so low. How cruel is our society.

    Our great Engineers and corporation officers need to be honored by “Bhartha Rathna” and also what ever awards!!!!!

    Poor laborers are not having life insurance, no medical coverage, and also no union. When such things happen no moral policing, no rama sena, no vhp, no youth congress, no bjp yuva morcha, no aap barking do#s, and all f…. leaders are shutting their mouth and a##.

    Nothing happens, I assure you. These builders and all very much prepared to such consequences. It's poor who will loose the life which these builders don't care about. No rules and regulations followed in any of these construction sites. It's assumed all goes well. No precautionary safety measures are in place. These builders will think why to waste money on that. when such incidents happens they will pay a peanut amount to these labours , major amount goes to other authorities to close the file. Anything is possible now. God only can save us...

    Its so heart touching.... how the house owners of near this project waited until this happens.

    Picture shows these builders almost entered inside these houses... who made with hard earn money.

    I know these will continue in Mangalore because of corruption.

    Which donkey has given approval for construction? A concrete retaining wall should be built in the first place for the excavated area which is so precariously close to other dwellings.

    Where did they study engineering? I am not a civil engineer, but still know that for these deep excavations, a retaining wall to secure the area is a must. A poor family has lost its breadwinner due to an idiot’s negligence. Who will compensate the loss forever? what about those houses close by?

    Excavating earth right under the existing houses has become the birthright of reputed builders these days! With the kind of money they have, they buy all the officials concerned to give a blind eye! Not only the concerned engineers of this project, even the MCC officials should be made party in this incident!

    Everyone in Mangalore who has a bit of land/money becomes a developer/ builder/ contractor in Mangalore and these try to bypass all the stringent Indian requirements by the assistance of our corrupt officials so what can we do as mentioned earlier 80% is corrupt so let the 20% suffer democratic way

    Contractor, Site & MCC Engineers are responsible.Before issuing build,licence MCC Engineer in charge should make sure all necessary precautions are in force.This is not the first time such accidents were taken place and @least hereafter MCC should take note of the fiasco and do needful to prevent the future accidents.

    Dinesh, in addition to the contractors and builders the MCC should also be made responsible for giving Licence to the builders without estimating the threat to the houses around that place.Looks one of the house will collapse as monsoons are approaching .
