Bhatkal: U T Khadar conducts midnight raid on government hospital

Yahya Hallare
Daijiworld media Network - Bhatkal

Bhatkal, May 14: Health minister U T Khadar conducted a surprise midnight raid on Bhatkal government hospital here on Tuesday May 13.

The attender who was shocked to see the minister at an odd hour, tried to wake up the doctors.

After inquiring with the attender, Khadar himself woke up the sleeping duty doctor, it is said. The doctor was dumbfounded when the minister asked him if he was sleeping instead of attending to the patients.

Khadar went through the attendance register and reportedly found wrong entries and proxies for nurses and doctors who were not even present in the hospital.

Noticing that the hospital was dirty, he enquired about the Rs one lac funds that the government sanctioned to the hospital to maintain hygiene. He also went through the accounts regarding spending of Rs 12 lac that was provided by the government for medicines.

The miserable condition of the hospital angered the minister and he told Dr Krishnaji that he would visit the hospital soon to check the attendance and maintenance of the hospital.

He was upset about the locked gates too. He asked the doctors what they would do if patients came at midnight.

ZP member Raheem Sheik who was present on this occasion pointed out many other shortcomins of Bhatkal government hospital. The minister learnt that the hospital authorities charged the poor patients for using ambulance to take them to Kundapur, and that the most needed medicines were not available in the hospital.

U T Khadar refused to accept security from Bhatkal sub-inspector Subanna and Johnson D'Souza who rushed to hospital with local officers. After inspecting the hospital for an hour, Khadar returned to Mangalore, warning the hospital staff about his next visit.

    Dr Aloysius
I am not sure in which part of USA u live and practice ,if at all. But,I have done my training in one of the best cardiac centers in the world. When we are busy we don't rest but there are days when you have less admissions or surgeries in the OR. We rest/sleep when we can.
It depends on the set up u work .You can misguide people into believing that doctors in USA don't sleep or rest when on call. Note:It is not same as sleeping when a patient is supposed to cared for. There are nurses who take care of the patients in floor and call if needed. In ICU with critical patients it is a different story.

Sure, Ministers visit to the Hospital staff was a sick at midnight.and they must have slept well once he is gone. He should have fired the absent People immediately and taken to Task about the bills further on the next day.Even he should have seen inwards or patients condition how they are treated ,dirty or clean, hygienically(WC)etc.doctors are supposed to be uniform on duty ,not complete changed ,certain hospitals allow to rest when nothing emergency is.When front door is closed ,I dont think they will take any Patient in.but Minister has given a note that he may come again anytime.well done.

    Congratulation to Mr. Qadirwarigey.
    What a job done anna.
    Well done.
    Keep it up.
    And also without police security.

Even though I tried to capture him chatting on facebook on video i could not do so as all the windows used to be closed.

It is best if someone complains about the absence of Doctors\medical staff in hospitals in northern Karnataka to the Health Department.

If Mr. UTKhader reads Mr. Shankar's grievance he should take steps to "TAKE ACTION" against the erring medical staff there.

The biggest worry is no doctors in govt hospital and the only way is to make it compulsory to serve in rural areas but BJP passed a legislation saying that they can pay fine and get away with it . yes, everything is accepted. But what action is taken for all those errors. Nothing right. Was the doctor in charge has been penalized, No I don't think so. There should be immediate action, on the spot. Fire the officials immediately and recruit or post new in charges. That will only raise the alert. or else doctors and nurses will be used to another drama and they will learn how to handle it.

U T Khader is a midnight messiah. He is probably suffering from insomnia for which he needs to get treatment at the earliest. No rule says that doctors on night duty should not sleep. Instead they should attend to the needy patient, and once done they can rest. That is why all hospitals have to have doctors duty rooms separately for males and females. They should be hounded for derilection of duties and not at the whims and fancies of UTK.

Step taken by the health minister U.T.Khader is highly appreciable. Periodic surprise check is always required but what is thee use? Once he leaves the hospital premise, trend will be the same like "Nayiya Baala Handeyalli Haakidha Haage". Non-availability of the life saving drugs, expensive medicines are not at available in the hospital and common and regular problems. These things I have experienced in one of my relatives case, who are very poor and holders of BPL ration card and suffering from breast cancer. When questioned, answer is not in stock, not identifying, this is the first time doctors are prescribing etc.If nobody is there with the patient, who knows something about hospital formalities then the poor patients should rot/die in the hospital for want of medicines.Attitude of the staff, nurses, doctors are another head-ache in Govt hospitals except few.I experienced this in one of our relatives case, who is suffering from breast-cancer,undergoing treatment in Wenlock hospital,Mangalore. She is very poor, living with rolling beedies,BPL card holder, still she is being charged an exorbitant amount for her medicines, which we have to source it from outside. Why it is so.Minister's statement, surprise checks etc are only on the paper. When we visit the hospital,we have to see the drama of the staff. They behaving like as if they are the owners of the hospital. We don't have any say in front of them.Ridiculous.Ministers coming, visiting giving big big lectures but in reality nothing is happening, only on the paper. All these are dramas to appease the public. As long as they are getting salary for nothing, this type of activities will continue and cannot be controlled unless something severe action is not taken against those erring hospitals.
