Kasargod: Health department officials swoop down on restaurants

Kasargod, May 15: In a swift operation, health officials on Thursday May 15 raided several restaurants and seized a large amount of stale food.


The raids were held at restaurants near the traffic junction, near KSRTC bus stand, Thayalangadi and near old bus stand. Spoilt food was seized from five restaurants.

The seized items included stale parotas, chicken fry, fish, milk, grams, eggs and banned plastic.
 
The raids continued from 7 am to 9 am.

The spoiled food was kept in the freezers of the restaurants. Kitchens of several restuarants were found to be shabby and uncleans. The officials said that such restaurants will be served notices.

Health department heads N Rajan, K P Rajagopal, R Ajith, Sudhir and Aboobacker led the raids.

    Why should one blame only kasargod? when we check our Hotels in Mangalore and elswhere are also not better. only a few are worth hygienic conditions. Everybody tries to save Money.when People dont complain and stop coming,they will continue their usual ways.Only strict and sudden checking ,when not satisfied,close and warn them to clean ,when still not satisfied Close forever.only this way can be maintained a good Hotel or restaurants.how many times children fell sick from midday meal in School,even there was a rat was in.etc.But inspectors are not taking serious Action against them ,so continues.regular check is important.There are rats are running about,cats,cockroaches are not to Forget.Rest Food should be not kept back,as in hot summer is spoiling soon.can be given to beggars instead of storing inside.

    Give more importance to the health of the commoners. Most of the eateries are not fit to get a license and the health department in the panchayat, taluk and district region have given least priority to this sector. Almost all the cafes and restaurants are in a big mess. The store rooms, the kitchens, the dinning halls, the clothes of the staff are in absolute pathetic state. They were not given toilet training like to wash their hands after toilet use, to use gloves while handling food, to keep their nails clean, to cover the head and to give medical leaves to the sick workers. Any contagious diseases are so dangerous to the regular customers but the health department and the elected leaders don't find that very important. More over the health department officials are very corrupt and issues renewal of licenses by taking huge bribes.

    Street vendors under the kuntikan flyover are informed well in advance of the raid if at all it takes place once in a year or six months. Who informs them ??? I know who. So what is the point in conducting a raid, the guys are back to business the following day. It is just a drama. I am a witness to this drama. Concerned inspectors are hand in glove with most of the street vendors who sell food on roadsides. So it goes and there is no control or end to this menace.

    Let every traffic ..health...sanitary ....all ( inspector sfrom every dept)
    and induct and strengthen these depts..inspectors get some incentives for catching these folks who break the LAW. There are standards & rules to follow..
    be strict like in Europe/usa/japan...
    care for the people..do your duty ..with a conscience.

    Nice move by the health department officials, this raids should be extended in other parts and road side eateries. In road side eateries I have observed,they are using contaminated water,un-cleaned utensils and even the man who prepares/cooks/serves the food is unhygienic but public not aware of it but their only mantra is food is very tasty, yummy at the cost of their health. Even the place where they are serving is not clean.This type of raids to be conducted everywhere including five-star hotels, all the restaurants and thier kitchen and their staff. Health cerficate to be given for the food handlers,proving they are free from any contagious diseases. Rules should be uniform everywhere regardless of their grade/status.

    Good initiative but why only Kasargod, is this just to please the minister in charge. This should be done all over south kanara and state as a whole and mangalore in particular. What about those street vendor's road side eateries which are operating and serving food under unhygienic conditions which are worse than some of the restaurants. Conduct a raid under the kuntikan flyover and see what you will find and ban them as well.

    In Kerala health officials atleast have some concerns. What Karnataka Officials are doing? There is lot of difference in administration in Kasargod and DK.In Karnataka they only speak,Nothing much in action

    Why did the Kasargod health department forget to inspect mangalapuram restaurants. Here you can find cockroaches and rats mixing with the workers in the kitchen even in the so called reputed big names.

    I once brought a masala dosa and a some remains of cockroach in a good hotel in Happanakatta . The name of the hotel is what Mughal emperor Shah Jahan built in memory of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

    Quality of eatables and drinks should be maintained very strictly all over India either for outdoor or indoor vendors. Outdated frozen meat,eggs, vegetables,Previous day's sambar is used for Idli/Vada Sambar,Remained,Frozen sour materials are used for Dosa/Idli, Duplicate liquors are sold everywhere. Our officers are treated as VIP guests and honored separately in A/c Rooms when they visit there.

    These restaurants should be permanently closed down. And why the media does not publish the name of the hotels/restaurants and owners name ? They should be made public and even if they open no body should visit those hotels?

    A has to be read as I
    S has to be read as N
    A* has to be read as G (A*equal to G)....................and so on

    Good move by health department. There were similar raids in Mangalore on street vendors, but that too with regard to trade licence and not quality of food. From a consumers perspective, I don't  care if the vendor has a trade licence or not, but quality of food is important.

    Most of the kitchens of restaurants in Kasaragod are unhygienic and filthy. Secondly, do the kitchen staff maintain their personal cleanliness? No.

    Perished vegetables, poor quality cooking oil (always recycled for frying food) expired food ingredients, staled meat, poultry and fish etc. are the cost saving ideas in most of the hotels for generating high revenues.

    Need honest Health Dept. personnel for checking the above deficiencies. They should not allow to get their palms greased.

    These restaurant owners too are helpless. So accustomed are their customers about these stale and rotten food dished out to them, they complain and vomit if served anything fresh.
