Kundapur, May 17: The police on Saturday May 17 busted an illegal betting activity at Rattadi in Jaddinagadde, Amasebail here and took two persons into custody. The police also seized Rs 8 lac in cash from the accused.
The arrested are identified as Sadananda Shetty (38), a resident of Rattadi, and Ashok Bhat (38), a resident of Amasebail Mavinakadu.
It is said that when counting for Lok Sabha elections was in progress on Friday May 16, Sadananda Shetty, Ramanna Shetty, Chandra Shetty and Prakash Hegde had placed bets of Rs one lac each (total Rs 4 lac) in favour of BJP candidate Shobha Karandlaje, against Ashok Bhat who placed his bet on Congress candidate Jayaprakash Hegde.
As J P Hegde lost and Shobha won, he had pay Rs four lac in addition to his Rs four lac. Sadananda Shetty and Ashok Bhat had put Rs 8 lac in a sack and reportedly did the transaction at Nandikona bus stop of Rattadi.
As soon as the police received information about the betting, under the directions of SP Dr Boralingaiah, and under the guidance of DySP C B Patil, Amasebail police sub inspector Nasir Hussain and team raided the spot. They arrested the two who had indulged in betting and seized eighty bundles of Rs 100 notes, each bundle containing 100 notes.
The two were produced in Kundapur court and released on bail. A case has been booked under sections 87 of IPC.
Police officials Jayaprakash, Mahabala, Siddappa, Krishna, Shantaram, Ullas and driver Anand participated in the operation.
