Mangalore: Accused in Vittal rape case brought to city

Mangalore, May 20: Bakuta Basheer and Radhukatte Basheer, who were recently arrested from Gujarat in connection to the alleged rape of a minor in Bantwal, were on Tuesday May 20 produced in front of the media.

Addressing a press meet at his office here, SP Dr Sharanappa said that a case of abduction and rape of a minor was filed in Vittal police station on April 24. Ever since then, the accused were absconding.

Three persons were named as the accused in the case - Bakuta Basheer (29), Radhukatte Basheer alias Kadambu Basheer alias Abdul Basheer (23), and Jabbar.

The police received credible information that among the three, Bakuta Basheer and Radhukatte Basheer were in Jamnagar and Dwarka districts of Gujarat. Soon after the information was received, Dakshina Kannada police commissioner contacted the superintendents of police in Jamnagar and Dwarka and passed on the information.

Acting on the information, on May 17, Okha marine police sub-inspector took Radhukatte Basheer and Bakuta Basheer into custody. The accused were then handed over to Vittal police sub-inspector Raghavendra and other personnel, who brought them to Vittal police station on Tuesday May 20.

Among the three accused in the case, Jabbar and Radhukatte Basheer also face theft cases in Puttur, Sullia, Ullal, Kadaba and Uppala police stations.

The accused are being interrogated further, Dr Sharanappa said.

The investigation was conducted under the directions of the SP, with DySP of Bantwal in charge of the case. The police team led by Bantwal circle inspector consisted of PSI Raghavendra, DCIB personnel Sanjeeva, Taranath, Uday Rai, Praveen of Beltangady police station, Sundar Raj, Chamaiah and Janardhan.

In April this year, the 14-year-old victim in Idkidu was taken away by Radhukatte Basheer and Bakuta Basheer to Madikeri and allegedly raped repeatedly for three days. Their friend Jabbar, who came to know of the incident, reportedly took advantage of her and threatened to pour acid and kill her if she revealed the incident to anyone, stated the complaint filed by the girl in Vittal police station.
