Udupi, May 22: A man was thrashed by the public for alleged eve-teasing near city municipal council office here on Thursday May 22, and handed over to the police.
It is said that a woman had come with her husband to Udupi on Thursday, and while her husband went to a pharmacy near CMC office, she stood outside by the road waiting for him.
Meanwhile, a man who was standing nearby reportedly began staring at her and making lewd gestures. The woman at first ignored him, but when he started coaxing her to go with him, she complained to her husband and to the locals who were nearby.
The locals swung to action and caught hold of the man, and thrashed him. The police arrived at the spot and he was taken to the town police station.
Police sources said that the man seemed mentally unstable and could not even tell his name clearly. He said he was from Bailoor, Karkala.
The locals said that the area around CMC office is notorious for immoral activities, and call girls are usually seen in the vicinity. Some months back, the CMC officials themselves had taken action. The police on their part have been ineffective in controlling the activities, say the locals.
