Mangalore, Jul 5: In a startling revelation district officials have revealed that Monkey Fever and Rat Fever (Leptosirosis) are very much prevalent in the district and they have already claimed lives of two women at Nelyadi and Panja respectively.
This was revealed during a meeting regarding the prevention of outbreak of epidemics on Tuesday July 4 at deputy commissioner's office. The meeting was presided over by deputy commissioner M Maheshwar Rao.
During the period of January to May, 2006, a total of 158 blood samples were collected and out of them 54 were tested positive for monkey fever. Among these on Neelamma (65) of Panja in Sullia taluk died without responding to medication.
In the same period a total of 20 samples were collected and out of them 5 were tested positive for Leptosirosis (Rat Fever). Among these on Kamala of Nelyadi in Puttur taluk died.
