Mangalore, Jul 8: An awareness programme on malaria and communicable diseases was held in the city on Friday July 7.

Speaking on the occasion, Gokuldas Shetty, president, taluk panchayat, said that communicable diseases can be dealt with if the health department and Anganwadi workers work hand-in-hand. Rural areas should be educated towards the government organized check-up camps and immunization programmes, since such camps see thin attendance, he said.

The health department has opened has opened special counters at bus stand and railway station, since the city has a large number of floating population. Health check-up is conducted for construction workers who migrate to the city from other places, he added. The taluk panchayat has also taken steps like fogging and spraying, to control threat from mosquitoes, he added.

He opined that the present medical staff will be perturbed if Primary Health Centres will be handed over to private medical colleges.

Also present at the workshop were Dr H Jagannath, district health officer, health department staff and Anganwadi members.
