Dubai bride fails to turn up, but sues groom for failing to pay Dh250,000 dowry

Dubai, Jun 1 (Emirates 247) : Bride who refrained from marrying her bridegroom after being issued a cheque of Dh250,000 sued him after the cheque bounced.

The bridegroom, Egyptian,  MM, in his 30s,  is being prosecuted for issuing a bad cheque.

MM defended that the cheque had been issued on good intention grounds and it was related to signing marriage contract with his Ukrainian fiancée.

“We had agreed on Dh300,000 dowry.  I paid her Dh15,000 cash and she had collected Dh35,000 cheque. The remaining Dh250,000 cheque was returned because of insufficient balance,” MM told the jury.

"All these amounts were conditional to our getting married. Since we did not get married, she does not deserve any of the amount. She had refrained from completing our marriage," defended the accused.

However, the judge insisted on hearing from the accused an answer regarding whether he had signed the Dh250,000 cheque. The accused answered affirmatively.

The court adjourned the case until June 10 for the defence.
