Congress appoints Mallikarjun Kharge as its leader in Lok Sabha

New Delhi, Jun 2 (IANS): The Congress Monday appointed former railway minister Mallikarjun Kharge as its leader in the Lok Sabha, paving the way for him to be appointed the leader of opposition in the house.

Party general secretary Janardan Dwivedi told IANS that Kharge "has been appointed as the leader of the Congress parliamentary party in Lok Sabha".

Dwivedi added that the it was up to the "speaker to decide (whether the) status of leader of opposition" would be granted in Kharge's case as the party does not have enough numbers to claim the mantle of the main opposition party in Lok Sabha.

The Congress won 44 seats in the Lok Sabha in the polls. The main Opposition party is required to have at least 55 MPs in the Lok Sabha or 10 percent of it total strength of 545. However, the speaker of Lok Sabha can confer the status on his or her discretion.

If Mr. Kharge is the senior most leader in the Congress and has even served as minister in the union cabinet, then why was he not projected as the party’s PM candidate? Rahul Gandhi for PM and Kharge for Opposition? Logically speaking RG should take the chair of opposition.

Mallikarjuna Kharge is always called as "Dalit leader" ? why he is not called as a mass Leader or Cong Leader ?

Then why Ananth kumar is not called as a Brahmin Leader ?

Why caste name is attached to only the backward Caste leaders whereas upper-caste leaders do not have any such Caste Suffixes but they are blindly considered as mass leaders ?

Why should Rahul be the leader of opposition ?? Mr Kharge deserves this post and is experienced enough to handle it .Its an honour in a democratic govt to be a opposition leader and kharge deserves it more for his 45 years unbeaten career in politics . Moreover please note that for any policy to pass the Govt needs 382 votes and the bill has to pass in rajya sabha also , so blindly dont think that BJP has majority in both houses , wait and watch Amma and didi will twist this govt arms as per their will.

I was reading all viewers comments. I was totally surprised. Please note Mr. Kharge has done the following jobs/projects for Karnataka
1. Railway Division for Gulbarga under SWR
2. Special Status for Hyderabad Karnataka region
3. ESI Hospital in Gulbarga
4. Approval for Wadi Gadag Line and approved from Ministry of Finance for the funds
5. Starting of Trains from Mangalore Central to Madgaon 6 days in a week.
6. Implementation of Rail Coach Factory in Kolar

Please note after Mr. Jaffer Sharif and Deve Gowda it was Mallikarjun Kharge who did some things with regards to Railways for our State
. I agree he didnt give approval for Mangalore Division.

Please note when Deve Gowda made South Western Railway Zone he had proposed Mangalore Division under SWR but later when Congress came to power and SWR was in action Mangalore division was shelved. What did our so called powerfull Politicians from undivided Coastal Karnataka Oscar Fernandes, Janardhan Poojary and Veerappa Moily do nothing. So let us not blame others. We should move away from Caste, religion etc and praise Political Leaders who do justification for there state. Hats off to Mr. Mallikarjun Kharge though he had a short span in Railways whatever he could do he has done and as a Opposition Leader he will do his job with proper justification to his post. We must all be Proud that a Kannadiga has been made Opposition Leader.

Mallikarjuna Kharge is not a suitable choice. The Congress should have found someone with a good command over English and Hindi. This is needed during debates in Parliament. Kamal Nath would have been the right choice.

Who said Kharge is not good at English & Hindi ? He is an excellent orator in English as he has done BA-LLB and has practiced as an Advocate in Gulbarga for 10 years before joining Labour & Trade union Movement. Besides he can read write and speak fluent Urdu just like people of his generation of Gulbarga, Bidar & Raicur (Nizam Karnataka), where Urdu was widely used in day to day life and for Hindus sending their children to Urdu Midium school was a status symbol prior to our Independence (Virendra Patil & Dharam Singh were Educated in Urdu Medium School). So, Kharge's Hindi-Urdu is also excellent.

Sadly, this step has checkmated budding dalit leader Parameshwarappa in karnataka!!! Kharge was never made CM, inspite of his seniority. Instead his friend Dharam was made! later when there was time for him to be CM, they sent him to delhi!! Somehow, Congress has forgotten Dalits in Karnataka! Now with him being LoO, parameshi will have to sit quietly... Congress will pay heavily soon...

In fact we should be very happy that a south Indian, that too Kharge is made a opposition's voice, Because is is neither a good orator, nor anyone may understand what he may tlak or oppose in the Loksabha. So it will be free ride for BJP to get away witl some issues. I know he is a good leader and we do not have any issue with he winning his constituency consistently because he is non corrupt and done good works there. Dinesh, I'll tell you what the Truth is, I was not even 18 when I stated working at voting booths. The Congress Corporators used to pay us money and even give the head of the group some extra money so that they then distribute it to other for party benefits. Most of the group members though they supported BJP but worked on behalf of the Congress part. Why didn't anyone work for BJP because they did not pay.
