Kasargod, June 12: The power generation at Mylatti thermal power plant has come to a halt for the past five months.
The power plant situated at Mylatti of Poinachi is capable of generating 20.7 mega watts of power per hour and is the only power generating unit in the district.
The power plant is owned by teh KVK group of Andhra Pradesh. The plant was using diesel as fuel for power generation and had decided to provide electricity to KSEB in 2001 on contract basis at an agreed rate. However the state government backed out as it was an additional burden, thus leading the company incur losses.
The plant has stopped functioning for the past two years to prevent expenditure and the employees are facing an uncertain future. Nearly thirty employees including those from outside the state who are employed here are in a dire state.
The state is facing scarcity of power and is buying it from outside states at exorbitant rates. Besides that, there is load shedding to
tide over the scarcity. The problem could have been solved permanently by buying power generated locally. If the government comes forward to revive this and other power plants in the state, the power problem in the state can be solved.
