Udupi, Jun 13: Udupi district, labour department of Udupi, and district child labour planning organization, Udupi, jointly observed ‘World Anti Child Labour Day’ on Thursday June 12 at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Stadium, near DC office here.
District-in-charge minister Vinay Kumar Sorake said in his address, “Such programmes will help create awareness in society. Handicapping the children and sending them out to beg for money is now a big business.”
He further said that he has been appointed nodal officer at the taluk level to supervise Morarji Schools and hostels.
“In Udupi, four cases of child labour were found in 562 inquiries. In 2013-14, they discovered eight children after investigating 718 locations including hotel, garage, and mining. In recent years, 164 investigations have been conducted and nine children rescued. Since three years, 11 FIRs have been filed against owners. In 2013-14, flexes have been put up in six places by joining hands with Varth Ilakhe. ‘Makkala Meena’ was held at Brahmavar and more than 15 programmes were conducted by various organizations to prevent child labour,” added Sorake.
Muddu Mohan, Udupi DC, Kanakavalli, CEO of Udupi, Keshav Koteshwar, Ramachandra, and M N Devraj were present on the occasion.
