Mangalore: Man dies after falling into drain

Mangalore, Jun 15: Maxim Veigas (50) from Debbeli in Harekal village  in the taluk near Ullal on Thursday June 13 fell into a drain near his home and had gone missing. His body was later found at the spot after water flow in the drain depleted.

Maxim, a farmer by profession, was on a visit to his plantation near his home on Thursday when tragedy struck. While crossing a minor bridge across the drain that was overflowing with water at the time, he slipped and was washed away. 

Maxim has left behind his wife and a son. His wife rolls bidis and his son Nikhil, who is 17, is unemployed. The family is in a dire strait as he was the only breadwinner of the family.

Immediately after getting to know of the incident, tahsildar Guruprasad, ensured that a sum of Rs 1.5 lac from the natural calamity fund will be paid to the family the same day.

At the request of the family, the cheque representing this relief was handed over on Saturday in the presence of Harekal gram panchayat former president, Mabahal Hegde and others.
