Udupi: Speeding car kills elderly man, reporter's presence of mind leads to driver's arrest

Udupi, Jun 15: In a hit-and-run case, an elderly man was killed while crossing the road at Uchila here on Sunday June 15. The driver of the car that caused the accident was arrested a while later, thanks to an exemplary presence of mind shown by a reporter.

The deceased has been identified as Dejappa S Poojary (65), a resident of Haleangady. He hailed from Belapu near Muloor.

He sustained severe injuries on the head and was rushed to a hospital in Udupi, where he breathed his last.

It is learnt that he had come from Haleangady to attend a spiritual programme at relative's house in Paniyoor. When he was crossing the road after getting from the bus, a Swift car with Maharashtra registration rammed into him. It is said that the car was moving from the opposite direction at a high speed and sped away without stopping.

A reporter from Uchila who witnessed the accident noted down the number of the car and immediately informed the police. The Kaup police who swung into action intercepted the car near Katapady and arrested the driver besides seizing his vehicle.

The driver of the Swift car has been identified as Chandrakant from Kunjur.

Dejappa Poojary leaves behind his wife Mohini and three daughters.

A case has been registered in Padubidri police station.

    Among india, Goa is better in driving road manners. Other places in all over india drivers driving like mad dogs. strange & sad thing, after being so many innocents are dies in accident by wrong driving, still no actions & inspections.

    Normally from Paniyoor to Uchila -Bus as well as other vehicle move to Udupi thru wrong side it is the common practice and not moving south end turn and and following traffic rules & their Safety. Very eagar to proceed Udupi and even near Uchila North side bus stop, parking middle of the road and side by side coming from Paniyoor vehicle and not bothered to follow thier safty as well as persons near bus stand.Even in Uchil two wheeler and auto cross middle of the road it is dangerous. Traffic rules should be followed by the Drivers,in the meantime in Uchila Police dept has to depute Personnel even for little period thereby avoid accidents or even educate to follow traffic signals.

    no idea if name of the reporter is kept hidden to retain confidential.
    any ways, well done reporter. Just because of the reckless driving another life gone. But one small gap here is to see how exactly the incident happened. if it's wrong side or really a reckless driving, yes driver should be penalized. but some times it may be like people just get down from bus and cross. either unknowingly ot lost in some thoughts and in such cases drivers can not do anything. Many cases in past where drivers loose their life in attempt to escape such crossings. So, let's not blindly conclude. with the help of eye witnesses and all definitely it can be derived was was the reason. but driver should not run away lust like that. now he is creal criminal and face the consequences.

    you may not be true always. Just close your eyes and feel it was your dear one and then see if you want locals to protest or be cool and relax. yes, some times it happens as mob is created unnecessarily. this is not a communal issue for someone to create tension. It was in front of the helpless mother her son killed by this bas..rd. If it was your dear one, you may realise why the locals protested so strongly.

    not sure where I went wrong. I counld not recollect my comments which you refereed. but I am confused where it smelled communal. I am telling you , I am not. I always comment being neutral. Any ways, here is the above incident also, if it was recklessness drive, I stand with the decision to penalise the driver. If it was accidental where passenger just got down from bus and crossed the road with out checking the road ( which usually happens ) , if that's the case I may see it as it's not complete fault of car driver. That's what I meant... hope I am not smelling communal here.

    The concerned authorities should carry out a detailed inquiry and not allow this guy to escape scot free.

    The photo of the damaged car just goes to indicate that he must have been driving like a berserk attempting to set a record of its kind on a Grand Prix Racing Track. Must have found Mangalore to be one of the hot spot favourites. The quick presence of mind by the photographer to memorize and forward the registration number to the cops is worth mentioning. He should be complimented, if not rewarded, to say the least., if there is no bureaucracy involved.
