Local press regrets Ecuador's defeat

Quito, June 16 (IANS): The Ecuadorian press regretted the 1-2 defeat of its football team to Switzerland in the FIFA World Cup.

El Universo wrote "Bitter debut of the Tri (the team's nickname) in Brazil World Cup!" The daily highlighted the header scored by Ecuador's Enner Valencia in the 22nd minute in the match played at Brasilia's Estádio Nacional Mané Garrincha, reports Xinhua.

The goal "unleashed the joy of 14 million Ecuadorians," said El Universo but it was not enough for "the Tri which showed lack of order in the midfield".

Ecuador and Switzerland are part of Group E along with Honduras and France.

On the other hand, El Telegrafo's headline was "a last-minute fall".

"At minute 92 Antonio Valencia failed a good play," said El Telegrafo. The daily said that "in the next minute, Haris Seferovic took advantage of the counter-attack, defeated goalkeeper Alexander Dominguez and scored the goal that defined the match".

Meanwhile, El Comercio's headline was: "Switzerland undressed the mistakes of the Tri". The daily added that the Ecuadorian team began playing very well, even scoring in the first half. But Ecuador had problems with the Swiss defence.

Hoy wrote: "Switzerland defeats Ecuador in the last minute" highlighting that "mistakes are paid" referring to Valencia's failure.
