Mangalore, Jun 20: Heavy rain lashed coastal Karnataka on the night of Thursday June 19. Several trees were uprooted, electric supply was disrupted, vehicles were damaged, and some people suffered injuries as a result.
A tree got uprooted near the graveyard at Nandigudda in the city, creating traffic bottlenecks for sometime. A huge tree fell across the road near Forum Fiza Mall in Pandeshwar in the city, posing problems for the road users.
A huge peepal tree, said to be over a hundred years old, that was majestically standing on flower market cross road near car street in the city got uprooted due to the fury of rain. As a result, the roof of the flower market, as well as a car parked in front of the market suffered heavy damages.
A transformer in Valencia in the city was damaged due to a fallen tree. Traffic on Dharmasthala-Mangalore highway was affected due to a tree that fell on Thursday afternoon near Kolpadabail near Madantyar. There are reports of some people suffering minor injuries due to fallen trees. Wheels of some vehicles which took Malemar Road route in the city got buried in the sticky mud as the road has turned sticky and muddy.
Power supply stood disrupted for the major portion of the night due to fallen trees which severed electricity supply cables, and other reasons. Supply to most areas was reswumed by Friday morning.
The meteorological department has predicted heavy rain all over coastal Karnataka and several places located in malnad and western ghats area. This prediction is valid till Saturday morning.
