Bangalore, Jul 25: Prof Raman Sukumar, chairman of the Centre for Ecological Sciences, Indian Institute of Science, has been awarded the 2006 International Cosmos Prize in recognition of his services and academic achievements in the fields of ecology and conservation biology in the Western Ghats.
In particular, his research on the ecological relationship between humans and elephants and the resolution of conflicts between them has been internationally recognised as pioneering work in the little explored field having to do with coexistence of wildlife and humans, according to a release from the Asian Nature Conservation Foundation, Bangalore.
Dr Sukumar is only the 14th recipient of the award.
The International Cosmos Prize is an annual award presented by the Expo'90 Foundation to honour those who have, through their work, applied and realised the ideals, which the Foundation strives to preserve.
