Puttur: Jul 30: An elephant killed its own caretaker on Friday at Puttur.

The pachyderm seriously injured its mahout in Bijila estate at Paledu in Tannirupanta village here. The man was rushed to the hospital where he died.

Shajan Chandran (35) was a mahout who hailed from Kuthirakundi in Koppa taluk. He had come to Mangalore with a trained elephant Arjuna of one Varghese in Kottayam district of Kerala. The elephant was hired by Sudevan of Mangalore on contract basis and was used for shifting huge trees.

On Friday, Arjuna caught hold of Shajan using its trunk and then stamped him, while he was trying to feed it.

Shajan was rushed to the government hospital Puttur and later shifted to a private hospital where he died.

He is survived by wife Srimati and a four-year-old daughter Devika.
