Bangalore, Jul 30: Udupi in-charge minister of the district V S Acharya has strongly defended the need for the Nagarjuna power project on Saturday in Bangalore.

Acharya said that the state desperately needed power generation. “All those who are opposing the project should go to Raichur to see how it is done. There is no need to worry,’’ he maintained.

Acharya said there are only three problems with coal-based thermal plants like Nagarjuna — dust, ash and sulpher. “But with good quality coal, all these problems are considerably reduced. In Raichur, bricks are being made from the ash and this is what is being used to build the Bidar medical college,’’ he contended.

The more environmental-friendly gas option for power plants could take 10 more years to become a viable, he said.
