Mangalore: Students propose Zebra cross, speed breaker near lower Bendoor circle

Mangalore, July 4: "The new traffic rule enforced on the route from Bendoor to Balmata circle is to check the vehicular density and ensure free flow of traffic on the road," said assistant commissioner of police (traffic) Uday M Nayak.
 
He was addressing the children at St Theresa's School after patiently listening to the grievances raised by the students. The school is located near the lower Bendoor circle and according to the students they have been encountering a few traffic issues after the revision of the traffic rule. 
 























 
 
Ayushi, one of the students, emphasized on the need of a zebra cross and a speed breaker to help the smooth crossing of students of the school. After the one-way rule, the vehicles move at a high pace which causes inconvenience for the students in crossing the road, she said. Responding to the plea, the ACP promised that measures would be taken swiftly to troubleshoot the problem. 
 
Another student contended that the buses, both private and KSRTC do not halt in front of the school. Due to this, students are required to walk till St Agnes College where the buses stop to ferry the commuters. The ACP assured that he would talk to the bus operators about a stop near St Theresa School for the better convenience of the children. 
 
To the pleas that stated that due to the one-way traffic, commuters are forced to take a roundabout for moving to and fro and this consumes much time as against the earlier traffic regulation, ACP advised the students to adapt to the situation. "Unlike others, there are no parallel routes to control traffic in the city. This has led the traffic department to modify the rule with a one-way norm," he added. 
 
Every day 300 plus vehicles are being registered in the city resulting in additional traffic. The traffic has to be modified to deal with this. He expressed that the department would consider the pleas on the one-way rule put-forth by the children and if needed the rule could be modified. As of now it was an impediment for the department to bring in a new rule for the road, he concluded.

    The change has been brought for the betterment of our society, we agree. We request the higher authorities to please make proper arrangements for parking along the road for the parents to their children. Also the bus owners should be instructed strictly to ensure that their drivers do not over speed. Along with the zebra crossing and proper parking, surely this will be a success. Please put a strict rule for the bus drivers not to over speed on any road.Once the rule is enforced many of the accidents can be avoided.

    Mary,
    Parking of vehicles was a problem the school authorities should have thought of when building the school.
    Does the school have any parking ?
    Any set back ?
    Traffic moves 24 hours school timing are just 10 minutes morn and 10 evening.

    Mary Dcunha, the parents pay hefty fees to the school not the corporation. Let the school provide parking. You want to park vehicles on the side of the road? Where will the residents of the area drive their vehicles?

    I am sure all these Police officials have seen that a combined speed breaker cum pedestrian crossing has been made in so many different cities. As they surely know the IndianRoad Congress has specified the dimensions of such speed breakers- weel it is easy to have two of them say 6-8 mtrs apart and between the two have it a a pedestrian crossing with a 24/7 amber blinking light and a CCTV camera to catch the rule breakers.
    WE have not yet reached that level but should not be difficult to have a stop button that changes te amber light to red light for pedestrians to cross say with a one/two minute or so change time in between.
    Why not try it out at one/two places say St Theresas and Kankanady Bypass Crossing as a starter??

    For 15!minutes starting and finish of school let police control traffic. St Agnes has no problem.

    Light house hill road in our younger days was not one way nor was balmatta road.
    All have to bear with traffic and road sense.
    Schools should not be given licence which spring up at unctions and built on main roads main roads with no set back.
    Neither has the school play grounds nor parking.
    What is good for the public in general should be implemented.
    If another bus stop is planned traffic will be in chaos !

    It is good to see ACP Mr. Uday Nayak talking and interacting with School Children.
    Let us appreciate efforts by Police Officers to bring some respite for traffic congestion in the city. There is always a beginning for a new rule, new road, new diversion and then we get used to it in some time. If we need discipline in traffic, discipline in driving, these kind of rules have to be brought in as a trial initially and then get it done once for all.
    I am sure these students would have been so enthusiastic to meet these friendly but professional police officials. Kids are aware of what Zebra Crossing is, if drivers are not aware, they will be made aware sooner or later..! Fine them or take stringent action on them when traffic rules are violated, they will know sooner than we realise. But police / RTO will have to do this on war footing.

    IS THIS NEW ONE WAY TRAFFIC RULE IMPLEMENTED TO HELP THE BUILDERS ON COLACO HOSPITAL ROAD???

    THE IN TRANSIT CONCRETE MIXERS AND OTHER EQUIPMENTS ARE PARKED ON THE ROAD. THE CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS AND THE DEBRIS ARE PUT ON THE ROAD. THE BAR BENDING WORK IS DONE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD.

    THE EXPLANATION IS INVITED FROM THE ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER OF POLICE,TRAFFIC DEPARTMENT.

    Let me enlighten you on the buildings near colaco Hospital.
    The ares where concrete mixers and bar bending is done does not belong to you nor the corporation it is the set back left after single site.
    This is owned by the land owner given to the builder for use.
    After the building is completed it will be handed over to the corporation for further road widening "FREE OF COST " you may check.How much have the nuns left ?

    Nobuddy slows down or stops at Zebra crossings instead they speed up. Yesterday near balmatta circle myself and few others who were standing at Zebra crossings for more than 5 mns were finally assisted by the cop who halted the traffic

    Earlier we used to get little bit chance to cross the road whenever there we find a gap between vehicles. But, since the new system of one way came into force, It is really difficulty for pedestrians to cross the roads. Motorist never give a dam about pedestrians whether there is a Zebra crossing or not. Very rude drivers in Mangalore. Why only Mangalore? Whole India is same.

    why we need zebra cross??? because so many people who are driving, do not even know why zebra cross is there. where ever we see Zebra cross the pedestrian has the utmost preference and all vehicles has to stopped to allow the pedestrian to cross the Road. First know the rule of driving and i hold RTO responsible who are issuing driving licences without imparting the proper knowledge of Driving Rules. it is really annoying to see a human beings are not respected when they walk along side of the Roads or crosses the Roads.In India along with the offenders of driving, RTO is also equally Responsible for accidents and deaths of so many people. In India driving is big show at the cost of human lives and i do not think any zebra cross will help unless the RTO imparts the knowledge of driving Rules at large.

    DOES THE POLICE OR THE DRIVERS KNOW WHAT IS "ZEBRA CROSSING" ?
    POLICE AND DRIVERS SPEED UP WHEN THEY SEE ZEBRA CROSSINGS AND NO ANIMALS CROSSING.

    THEY DOESNT BOTHER FOR THE HUMANS CROSSING "ZEBRA"

    You can confirm this statement by standing at the Zebra Crossing just outside commissioners office at Mangalore.

    Awareness classes on "ZEBRA CROSSING" must have taken to all policemen and drivers of the city . I am sure 90% of these may not be having right idea about this.
