Mangalore: Bike accident - Man loses life in a bid to avoid hitting cow

Mangalore, Jul 6: A man lost his life while trying to avoid ramming his bike into a cow at Malali cross, Kukkatte, Ganjimutt here late night on Saturday July 5, sources said. The incident came to light on Sunday July 6.

The deceased has been identified as Bhaskar Alva (34), a resident of Hosamane in Bajpe.

Bhaskar was member of Ganjimutt gram panchayat and also worked as a cargo loader at Mangalore International Airport.

Sources said that on Saturday night, he was riding back home, when at Malali cross a cow suddenly came in his way. In a bid to avoid hitting the animal, Bhaskar moved towards the side of the road and in the process, lost balance and fell from his bike. He died on the spot.

Bajpe police have registered a case.

    Without anybody witnessing the incident (occurred in the night) how can the cow hypothesis be propagated?

    Cows and stray animals are a big nuisance especially on highways as many an innocent have lost their lives due to the sudden appearance of a bovine or stray animal!!

    Recently there was a news report in DK a speeding bus full of passengers was suddenly braked just to save a snake crossing the road putting in jeopardy so many "human beings" traveling in the bus!!

    May god offer peace and strength to his family in order to bear this loss.

    Its really sad to see the loss of a young man, who was a breadwinner for his family.

    Mangalore and other urban centers across India MUST BAN the movement of cows, donkeys and elephants on main streets and their owners should be penalized for allowing their cattle to graze in busy areas.

    I am seeing from a different angle. When there is an illegal transport of cows, we scream cows are our god, we don't accept anybody killing it etc etc. We all come to road to strike against. Meanwhile I am seeing so many cows on roads, either sitting on NH or sitting by the road sides... and nobody bothers. Either corporation or municipality should take care of cleaning these up. Let these cows be moved to those Goshala which is in and around Magalore. It looks stupid when we say cow is our god and we pray it but so many cows are on the street troubling vehicles. Especially 2 wheelers who need to pay their life if they hit these cows as above incident. Whom to blame ...

    A few decades back while traveling to Mangalore by bus, it was night time and all of a sudden the bus severed off the road and traveled a few meters in the rubble before coming back. I went to the driver’s cabin to check what was happening and he replied that Cow came in the way. I tried to reason with him and questioned him - what is important 35 lives or one cow. He curtly replied “Cow is my God” …

    Bikes should be banned in India at least on national highways. I am sure he wasn't wearing helmet. I know it was the moment of panic for him, but hitting cow would have been the best choice that way both could have been saved. God give strength to his family to cop with this loss. Earlier days, when people were out from their house, they were scared of Dakus and man eating animals and now these accidents. Who says we are safe now! There is no guarantee a person who leaves home will reach back safe.
