Udupi: Youngster killed in bus-bike accident at Shankarapura

Udupi, Jul 11: A youngster was killed on the spot in an accident at Shankarapura here on Friday July 11.

The deceased has been identified as Shashank (24), son of Mahesh and Sumati Poojary, resident of Arsikatte, Bantakal.

Sources said that Shashank was returning after dropping his mother at the bus stand when the accident took place.

It is said that Shashank was riding behind Udupi-Shirva Lobo Travels bus that halted to take in passengers. While trying to overtake the bus, Shashank was hit by another bus that was moving at a high speed towards Udupi from Shirva.

Shashank was a good volleyball player. He was the only child to his parents.

A case has been registered.

    these drivers usually stop bus on fully on the road rather keeping it on the half footpath. it really troubles the cars or bike which com with the basic speed. if these busses give sudden stop the person driving behind them cannot judge the stop and to avoid the hit fom behind the overtake takes place. i sm sure this has happened in this accident. To be frank the bus drivers drive very rashly..........

    In mangalore highest accident and murder. why police is not controlling traffic giving ticket for BUS people even BIKERS.. in mangalore people kill and go no one care.. EVEN people not stand for rights.. what kind people living in mangalore they childrens are dieing so bad way.. PLS stand stop this crazy driving plus ask traffic give high ticket for OVER DRIVE or fast drive. PLS STAND

    There is no point in posting RIP messages, because the loss to parents is inconsolable. What is the root cause of this death and several other deaths? It is these bus drivers who are merciless hooligans. Thank God I don’t stay in Mangalore. Or else, I would have picked a fight every day with these cheap absurd drivers. They drive so rashly on those narrow Mangalore and South Canara Roads. I don’t understand why the authorities don’t punish them for rash driving. Maybe, mafia, gangsters or politicians are involved in this bus business. They drive like they own the road. I have never seen such rash driving in any other part of India. If you are walking in the streets of Mangalore city, you would be so annoyed with their loud horn. They just honk for fun, like they are playing a piano. If you travel by bike, then God save you. If you are driving from Mangalore to Udupi, it’s a nightmare, these buses overtake in such a weird way, that they cause inconvenience to all other vehicles. The problem with these drivers is that they do not fear law, driving is fun and they want to prove to the other bus drivers that they can drive faster and reach sooner.

    Hello Mr Joseph - your views are very welcome and true but fyi about the accident this morning. It was a head on collision by the bike trying to overtake another bus and the bus driver had nothing to do with it.

    Hello Resident of Shankarpura, Thank you for the . Maybe, this bus driver had nothing to do with this particular accident. But what about the other bus driver who was speeding from the opposite end. Below is the message from the post.

    DK, with all other negatives, the pvt. bus menace is the biggest and a big killer of innocent citizens!! Above that, not following traffic rules, overspeeding coupled with horrible roads are the major cause of accidents which snuff the lives of innocent people most in the prime of life!!

    Compare Mumbai with a burgeoning population of more than 1.25 cores the BEST runs the most professionally run safe service which carries lakhs of commuters criss crossing the city with precision the drivers and conductors and maintenance staff are professionally trained and work for limited hours!!

    Unless a BEST like professional bus service is not introduced do not expect to see any fall in fatal accident rates!! Jai Hind!!

    In Bombay, the BEST buses though a monopolistic type, are given strict orders to NEVER stop buses in the middle of roads to pick up passengers who do not board at the bus stop. Yes, there are some who board the buses in between traffic signal intersections at their own risk. Worse still, since Bombay has several modes of transport (now the inclusion of mono rail and metro rail additional modes) BEST buses have now to think twice since before they have to pick up a passenger or not as they are incurring a loss of Rs. 2 lakhs every single day due to the mono rail and metro rail. There is a common sick attitude phenomenon of buses stopping all over in Karnataka. It is a utter disgrace for the state, the administration and all involved be it directly or indirectly since it is everybody's problem. Commuters think that they own the buses as per their whims and fancies and as if it is their father's property - some of them even go the height of asking the drivers to wait for them. What type of a junglee mentality is this? Some drivers / conductors even go to the extent of giving missed calls to favoured elite passengers when they are near their houses or when the bus is about to leave the depot etc. No wonder Mangaloreans have their heads in cow dung. I have even seen some typical people coolly boarding public buses as if they are boarding a chartered flight or pick up limousines. They don't have respect for others. The bus administration should issue stringent instructions asking their people to refrain from such nefarious activities. Mangalore bus administration need to take a cue from BEST to make it run like a professional undertaking.

    It happens because of the bus owner and the lazy public/passangers..Being in Udupi,i always saw bus drivers giving stop on non-bustand area(ie.,where bus-stops are not announced) just for the shake of money...And i also blame the lazy people who cant even walk to bustand and board the bus...they want bus to halt wherever they stand...And most bus will halt in the turning area,i dont even see signals there...First change yourself then start thinking of chaging the country...
