Mangalore, Jul 12: MLA of Mangalore South constituency J R Lobo on Saturday July 12 said that improving the basic infrastructure in Mangalore and transforming it into a major port city of the country was his main aim.

Addressing a press meet at the Eden Club here, Lobo said, "From over a year I have been working to make Mangalore a full-fledged port city and I will continue this work till the end of my tenure. There are five areas of development that we have to concentrate upon if this has to become a reality. They are - development of the old port, development of fisheries infrastructure, improving the basic infrastructure of the city, developing tourism, and development of IT and industries in the city," he said.

Fisheries

"Fisheries is the unique selling point of this region. People outside the coastal region are interested in seeing the various stages of fishing and the auction of catch and related activities. We can attract more tourists if we develop the fish markets of the city and improve the basic fisheries infrastructure," Lobo said.

"We plan to construct an air conditioned fish market at Kankanady. All the major markets of the city will be upgraded. Some of them have already received approval from the government.

"A meeting of fishing community leaders has been held with the chief minister followed by a meeting with the port development minister, the urban development minister and the fisheries minister. Many decisions to develop the infrastructure of the fishing port and other infrastructure of the old port have been taken," he informed.

Corniche project

"A three-phase corniche project (ring road) has been planned. Jappinamogaru-Kuloor-Gurupur corniche road will enable smooth flow of traffic. It will change the whole landscape of Mangalore. Even though the project is time consuming, efforts will be made to finish the project within the stipulated time and for this everyone’s co-operation is required," he said.

Tourism development

A project called 'Coastal Circuit' has been sanctioned to foster tourism in the district. The main agenda is to improve the beaches, and along with this, efforts will be made to complete the much anticipated Sultan Batteri hanging bridge through the PWD department, Lobo said.

New Planetarium to open by March 2015

J R Lobo also said that Rs 12 crore has been sanctioned for a new planetarium in Mangalore and the work is in progress. This will be the first 3D planetarium of the district and by next March it will open for visitors.

He also said that along with all the developmental works, more IT companies and industries will be brought to the city. "For this we have work on the development of basic infrastructure which in turn will foster connections with the neighbouring districts and result in more trade and thereby more revenue," he added.

"Efforts will be made to complete all the projects in my tenure. The state government is pro-development and will make efforts to implement all the above projects on-time," he promised.

Regarding the flow of drainage water on roads, he said, "Due to issues related to land, we were not able to set up an electric tower due to which the STP plant in Jappinamogaru has stopped functioning. I have spoken to the people concerned and soon the plant will start working. After this half of the drainage issues in the city will be solved."

Mayor Mahabala Maarla, deputy mayor Kavitha Salian, ex-corporators Mariyamma Thomas and others were present.

Mangalore need to plans not these projects Mr MLA. City lacks plans and your busy with press meets and highlighting useless deeds. First plan for the basic amenities than these secondary projects which could be done after years also.
    1. Plan roads in city
    2. plan signal in city
    3. demolish building which are violating MCC rules
    4. do something for parking issue
    5. now its raining and roads are turned as drains can you see this?
    6. Traffic jam in city , can you see?

first find solution for smaller issues than getting other projects spending our own money.

Too many assurances without any result. It looks like Mr Lo.bo forgets assurance. At Padil near water tank we about 100 people went to his office given representation, assured of result without any result.

Dear Mr. Lobo, it is good to hear plans for development of our Coastal city Mangalore. You have been a man of actions and less words, for which I have a great respect for you always..!!
Me, being in Tourism Industry, do agree we have potential but Government has always failed us in en cashing our rich potential. Hope you will do it for us, sooner or later.
I would like you to kindly note : 01. let us make proper pavements, foot paths, drainage systems and good roads for people of Mangalore, which are basic necessities, rather than, Ring Roads ( which is required, but after we have basic facilities ). If time permits visit Bejai New Road once when it is raining and you will know what am talking about..!!
    02. Hanging Bridge from Sultan Battery, which has been making rounds since Mr. Yogish Bhat's time, can wait till we see the ground reality 01st.. Let us have a good road to walk and drive around 01st than have a Hanging Bridge.
    03. Let us try and have clean drinking water facility and electricity for our people first rather than a bigger plan for Growth of Mangalore.
With due respect to you sir, let us try and get to ground realities, which you have always believed in and make a common man's life easier than create a Rich Man's World..!!
We will be seeing better days only if we look around and see what a common man wants.!!

Jossey bhai, please refer to what Mr Yogesh Bhat used to harp about during the past decade. Mr Lobo is just repeating it. But if he ensures these schemes are implemented, Mangalore will indeed leap towards development.
That said, I hope Mr Kateel and Ms Karandlaje also work for the betterment of our district as a whole. It is a known fact that "Modi wave" has been a major factor in their victory. Hoping and wishing they too will not sleep on their laurels for the next 5 years.

Dear Mr Lobo kindly read recent report on Economical times how Mangalore lost the chance to become IT hub in Karnataka after Bangalore..It is because of poor road, Electricity and lack of infrastructure though Mangalore produce quality Engineers and software professionals, instead of wasting time and money fish processing you can look into Major IT and Pharmaceutical cos who can bring jobs..

Till the NEW fish markets are built, there is a need to improve the (pathetic)condition of the existing markets. Most of the buyers and sellers are women, whose voice is unheard in spite of appeals and spot visits. We would like to have basic necessities along with development of the city. The cooperators of the respective territories should bring to the notice of concerned authorities.

It is good to see Mr.Lobo finally laying out his plans, though 13 months after he was elected. He seems to have just disappeared and we see him only attending NRI events in Gulf and builder events in Mangalore.

Lobo who earned a good name as government official appears to be shell of his former self. What happened? Common people are associating him with elite builder lobby rather than people representative.

That said, I am happy to see this news that at least finally he is waking up with some concrete plans.

I is good to see J.R. Lobo taking very active interest for the development of areas needing attention. I have known this gentleman for decades as a sincere and honest person trying to help people.

However Mr. Lobo, I would request to divert your attention to the foot paths within the city. We need foot paths to help the poor pedestrians. Whatever foot paths that we have need attention and repairs.Hope you will take this project on a priority basis.

JR Lobo is only dreaming and can do nothing. In Mangalore only the builders are making money by showing artificial layouts but no infrastructure at all. JR Lobo had initiated new face-lift for Kadri park and what has happened to this project? No proper drinking water in new buildings and water tanker mafias have sprung up. Now new story port and infrastructure?? Wow?

Same song... different singer.... We heard it from Mr Yogish Bhat and now we are hearing it from Mr J R Lobo. Hope this time at least 50% of these dreams are actually implemented..

Mr Lobo, you have been with MCC and know the way it functions. Please explore if you can bring some sort of planning in the way MCC utes projects. Each day, some or the other "concrete road" is blocked due to collapse of a manhole. In the hurry to spend funds, concreting of roads was done without shifting the water or sewage lines. Who pays for the rework? Ultimately the taxes paid by us go into this avoidable spend. Moreover, every year there is an increase in the property taxes, irrespective of Congress or BJP being in power.

You were elected because people hoped for change. BJP supporters like me and my friends also voted for you thinking you would bring in a new way of functioning. However once elected, you have just disappeared. Only news we hear about you is as a part of "inaugurations". Lots of hopes have been pinned on you please don't disappoint us.
