Karkala, Aug 8: The Hebri forest guards on Monday August 7 have arrested one person for smuggling sandalwood at Chara-Karadai basadi road near Hebri here.
The arrested has been identified as Surendra Naik, son of Kamanna Naik of Netnolli near Belve here. However, his accomplice Bella Naik, son of Kala Naik of Shedminane Mayabazar has managed to escape from the police.
The police stopped the duo while they were smuggling sandalwood on a two-wheeler. While Bella fled the place soon after seeing the police, Surendra was caught red-handed. The police seized sandalwood and the two-wheeler from him. The total worth of the seized goods has been estimated at Rs 25,000.
The raid was carried out after receiving a sure tip-off from local Bajrang Dal unit.
