Dubai, Jul 15: Ahead of Gulf Voice of Mangalore (GVOM) Season 4 to be held on November 7 this year in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman, the semi-finals of the UAE chapter will be held on September 26 in Dubai, for selection of two most proficient singers to represent at the finals.

Mangalore Konkans Dubai in its best endeavour to elevate the singing standard of the 12 semi-finalists, organized a workshop recently at the residence of James Mendonca, the honorary president of Mangalore Konkans Dubai. The workshop focused on mentoring the budding singers, targeting on honing the skills of singing and presentation on stage, keeping in mind the competence required for a Gulf-level contest.

The three-hour intense workshop comprised two sessions conducted by the two admired musicians Arun D'Silva and Ramiro Mascarenhas, both of whom were in the panel of judges at the preliminary round for selection of these 12 semi-finalists.

The first part of the workshop, conducted by Arun D'silva, involved audition of the 12 semi-finalists who have been already commenced preparations for their performance at the semi-finals to be held on September 26. While Arun encouraged each semi-finalist to introspect his/her own singing performance, the other semi-finalists were requested to give their positive feedback.

This self as well as group evaluation of the singers was a unique way of inculcating professionalism into their existing singing skills. The positive feedback provided to each semi-finalist was well received and encouraged them to put in rigorous efforts to practice to be truly qualified to sing at the Gulf level.

Arun appealed to the semi-finalists to take up various voice training exercises that would inspire, boost their morale and take serious note of their weaknesses and various aspects of their voices while singing as mentioned below:

1. Singing Power
2. Extending one’s vocal range
3. Vocal Flexibility and accuracy
4. Developing ones Vibrato
5. Sustaining voice when singing
6. Developing a smooth voice

Ramiro Mascarenhas through valuable examples, highlighted the importance of coordinating on facial expressions, actions and lyrics of the song. He stressed on the pitch control, breathing technique and accent / pronunciation of lyrics of the song.

Ramiro further explained how one's conscious and subconscious mind plays an important part in delivery of good singing. He also explained the difference between confidence and over confidence on the stage and how each of these affect one’s performance. Dressing up to the theme of the song, using the stage while singing, coordination with the musicians and swaying to the music are some of the hints prompted by him to the semi-finalists to give the best performance.

The briefing and guidance provided by both these mentors gave a big boost to the confidence level of the participants who are now enlightened on achieving success through perfection.
