Mangalore, Aug 9:  An awareness programme on Malaria was jointly organized by the Navodaya Grama Vikasa Charitable Trust and MCC Malaria Control Cell, here on Tuesday August 8.

Speaking on the occasion, Krishnappa Poojary, commissioner, Mangalore City Corporation (MCC), said that the citizens need to cooperate with the MCC, in combating Malaria. Preventive measures and awareness programmes are the need of the hour. Eight teams in the city have been set up to conduct blood tests to detect Malaria. Also, CDs have been distributed to schools to provide information on the spreading of the disease, he added. 

Dr B S Baliga, president, Malaria Control Action Committee, informed that the Dakshina Kannada district has registered to have the highest number of Malaria cases in the country. He added that the progress of the city is one of the factors for the rise in number. In spite of lacs of rupees being utilized to prevent the disease, non-corporation from the people has served to be another reason, he added. He urged every citizen to back the MCC in its endeavour  to fight the menace.

Also present among others at the programme were Narayana Kamath, managing director, Dakshina Kannada District Centre Co-operative Bank and Rajendra Kumar, president, State Apex Bank.
