Karkala: Three labourers dead, 18 injured in tempo accident

Karkala, Jul 18: Three persons died and around 18 others were injured in a goods tempo accident at Maroor near Ajekar here on Friday July 18.

Two women and a man died in the accident. Their identities are not yet ascertained.

It is said that the goods tempo was carrying 21 labourers to a construction site. A cement mixer too was loaded into the tempo.

Eyewitnesses said that the tempo driver was speaking on his mobile phone and also driving at a high speed. Due to the speed, the cement mixer rolled over to one side of the tempo, crushing three persons under it, source said.

Also, 18 others who were in the tempo were injured, some of them severely. They have been admitted to government hospital in Karkala.

Some of the injured are identified as Vijaykumar (60), Mahantesh (50), Hanumanta (45), Puttamma (21), Shobha (29), Gadiappa (45), Pakilesh (17), Veeramma, Neelamma (34), Ranganna Gowda (55), Ramanna (20), Sharanabasappa (18), Ellamma and Mahadevi.

It is said that contractor Nagappa picked them up at several points along the way to the contruction site. The locals said that the labourers were packed into the tempo in an inhuman way along with equipment, and coupled with the driver's recklessness, it resulted in the accident.

    Very sad. In this incident there was my grandfather who walking on the road and met the accident and died on the spit and isn't mentioned. The driver should be given life sentence.

    Ban on using mobile by drivers is root cause for many accidents. Police should slap heavy penalty to erring drivers and in case repeated cases, their license should be cancelled. Police, RTO and Govt all are responsible for not enforcing lawa

    The contractor who carelessly transported a heavy cement mixer without securing it properly along with the workers should be made to pay all the hospital bills of those injured, and compensate heavily next of kin of those innocents who perished in this accident!!

    Udupi RTO Staff is useless.They are
    sitting in their office all the time & collecting hafta from big transport contractors and others.
    Their duty is to check the vehicles
    everyday in different places.

    So sad to read innocent lifes lost. RIP. Tempo driver and contractor should be arrested for their negligence towards human lifes. If there was 21 animals in the tempo so many sanghis would screaming here about inhumane transporting. But now no b'coz in our twin district animals life has more value than humans !!

    Accidents of this nature perhaps occur almost every day and therefore it is high time that the perpetuaters of the crime are severely dealt with.

    Again PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN THE CURE. What steps can the authorities take to prevent these kind accidents. Hope they evolve some tangible methods to control the accidents of this nature.

    Very shocking and sad news.Goods transport tempo transporting 21 laborers with cement mixer!Police and RTO not taking any actions for such illegal transportation.Such type transport of passengers in goods tempo common in DK that also in busy hours of morning and evening.Apart from that lot two wheeler plying with three passengers for work site also common.May souls rest in peace.
