Udupi, Aug 15: A protest was staged by the rickshaw drivers on Monday August 14 evening against the city municipal council's decision to bring down the Information Centre building built by rickshaw union at Tiger Circle in Manipal near here.

Municipal officers, following the order of the commissioner of the municipal council, instructed the workers to demolish the Centre, following which the rickshaw drivers and owners led by president Kamlalaksha Kunder staged a protest.

The officers alleged that the building was constructed without permission from the CMC and was being used for commercial purposes.

MLA K Raghupati Bhat visited the spot and asked the officers and the auto drivers to maintain a status quo till the monthly general body meeting of the CMC. Consenting to this decision, the auto drivers withdrew the strike.
